Kaufmann House Palm SpringsOn May 13th 2008, the world-renowned auction house, Christie's, premiered its Post War and Contemporary Art auction to a full-house at 20 Rockefeller Center. There were many of the world's best paintings up for auction, including Elizabeth Peyton's "Kurt Cobain" and Andy Warhol's "Four Jackies".

But the highlight of the evening was the auction of Richard Neutra's Kaufmann House in Palm Springs. I had never been to a live auction before, so watching the live video stream was the next best thing. There were 57 lots (items) that were up for auction, and the Kaufmann House was Lot 42. The opening bid for this architectually significant home started at $9 million. The bidding was fast & furious, but the winning bid for this came in by telephone for $15 million. This is now the most expensive piece of real estate sold in the city of Palm Springs.

Richard Neutra, a student of Frank Lloyd Wright, designed his modern "masterpiece" for Pittsburg department store tycoon, Edgar Kauffman Sr., in 1946. The home was designed as a desert retreat from the harsh winters of the East Coast.

The Kaufmann House is one of top 5 homes in the United States, and now has a new owner. Stay tuned for more info.

Neutra's work is certainly intriguing, and it is nice to see that people have such passion for it. Any word on what the new owners are planning?

Harold - what an impressive piece of real estate. I love the way it melds into the desert hills. It would be wonderful to have that mountain view when you wake in the morning.

Frank,

I am going to do a little more digging on the new owner of this magnificent home.  The home was designated a Class One historical site in February, so the home's exterior cannot be touched.  My feeling that this will be a second or vacation home.

Linda,

The Kaufmann House is one of the most beautiful homes I have ever see.  The home is located near the base of the mountains, in the Las Palmas neighborhood of Palm Springs.  I love living in this neighborhood because I have the mountain views from my bedroom and it's only 2 minutes to Downtown.  Thanks for dropping by!!

Rick,

The next time you are in town, you need to do a drive-by and take a look at this home.  The Kaufmann House is located at the end of Vista Chino, heading west towards the mountains, just before entering the Old Las Palmas neighborhood.  Have a great weekend!!!

Check out this link from the LA Times.  Apparently, the deal fell through a few days after the auction.

Marla,

I couldn't believe that the sale did not go through.  I just didn't do an update to my blog post.  No matter what happens, the Kauffman House in Palm Springs will always be there for the world to enjoy this modern architectural masterpiece.

Have a great day!!
