1777 - During the Siege of Fort Schuyler the first U.S. flag was officially flown during battle, that consisted of only thirteen stripes, an early version of the Flag of New York, or the Grand Union Flag.
1900 - Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. is founded by Harvey Firestone to supply pneumatic tires for wagons and buggies, becoming a pioneer in the mass production of tires. In 1906 Henry Ford chose Firestone for Model T original equipment tires.
1933 - The Mickey Mouse Watch was introduced by the Ingersoll-Waterbury Company priced at $3.75 and later lowered to $2.95, the pocket watch was also available for $1.50.
1946 - Santa Claus Land, the world's first themed amusement park, opens in Santa Claus, Indiana. The world’s only post office to bear the name, receives thousands of letters addressed to Santa from all over the world every year.
1956 - Bedloe’s Island where the Statue of Liberty is situated takes the name Liberty Island. The island was a summer residence in 1746, and in 1756 a smallpox quarantine station. In 1811 the 11-point star-shaped Fort Wood was built and later it became the base of the statue.
1977 - Tandy Corporation’s Radio Shack announces the TRS-80, one of the world's first mass-produced personal computers selling for $600 (equivalent to $2,400 today), selling 3 times as many computers as Apple by 1980.
