Hiking Trails in Carlsbad California

Volunteers Needed for Trail Cleanups in 2017

Carlsbad has an abundance of hiking trails, about 50 miles worth – a big surprise to many who live here. And while there is something very special about walking on the beaches, there are plentiful options scattered around town.

The Carlsbad website has a complete list of hiking trails plus you can print maps for both North and South Carlsbad hiking trails. There are even some videos about a few of the trails.

Carlsbad Hikiing Trail at Hosp Grove

Carlsbad’s hiking trails range from easy to difficult, in a wide range of distances, so they appeal to and are suitable for just about every hiker.  Some trails are paved, while others are not, and some are wheelchair accessible. A residents in a number of master planned communities (e.g., Bressi Ranch, La Costa Greens) have trails to enjoy, too.

One of my favorite trails is along the Batiquitos Lagoon in the Aviara area of South Carlsbad. And the hike up Mount Calavera in the Calavera Hills area, with marvelous views in all directions, is a good one too, but much more vigorous.

Carlsbad holds a number of trail cleanup events during the year, and volunteers are always needed to help keep out trails in great shape for all to enjoy. The City provides a work plan and also safety training at the beginning of each of these trail cleanup events.

For the balance of 2017 volunteers are needed for the following Trail Cleanup Events:

September 30 – Lake Calavera Preserve (National Public Lands Day)

October 14 – Hosp Grove (off Monroe near the Shoppes at Carlsbad Mall)

November 18 – La Costa Glen (South Carlsbad)

December 9 – Old Rancho Santa Fe Road

Volunteers can also attend the quarterly Trail Volunteer Meetings. The next meeting is December 14 (location TBD – normally held at the Carlsbad Senior Center).

You can learn more about volunteer opportunities n Carlsbad on the city website page for volunteers. You can also either call 760-434-2929 or email to Volunteers@CarlsbadCa.gov.

I bet they get a good turn out for the trail cleanup event.  Usually hikers are very aware of their surroundings and want to keep them clean.

Hi Jeff - Trail cleanup is fun duty - you get some great exercise, spend time enjoying the great outdoors and give something back to folks who enjoy the same things. I hope they have a big turnout.

Jeff those appear to be really nice trails.  Hope there is a good number of volunteers to help clean them up.

I hope you have a great turn-out for the clean-up, Jeff! We have those opportunities here as well and typically have a good showing - everyone uses these trails and it's nice to pitch in and give back to the community for something that we all enjoy at no cost to us.

Jeff I am so sad to hear that hiking trails need cleaning up, I always considered hikers more in tune with nature and would not want to spoil the environment...how sad, Endre

Good morning Jeff.

I wonder if those who left their garbage on the trails would feel the same if people did it to their yard. People should think about it before they throw their trash on the trails.

Having a well maintained trail to hike is definitely enjoyable, I can't wait for it to get cooler here and I can get back out on the trails!

A trail clean-up is a worthwhile project. And it's fun to be a part of a group. One gets exercise, develops friendship, and gets to do something worthwhile.

Hi Jeff -- I understand Endre Barath, Jr.'s point -- it is sad that there is a need for such an event but hopefully the turnout will be good and awareness of the issue increases.

Hi Jeff - I am sure you love your trails and want to keep them clean.  Community responsibility and involvement is the only way to do that.

Something I like to do. My only hope is, those who use trails and nature spots treat it with respect and care to keep it clean and enjoyable for everyone.

Hi Belinda Spillman

All the trails I have seen are pretty well maintained and I have heard that they get a good number of volunteers for these events. The trails are certainly a valuable recreational resource here.

Hi Dick Greenberg

I have thought about participating but so far have not. I think it's time to sow my support!

Hi George Souto

Some of the trails are better maintained than others, probably due to usage. I think its terrific to have a program like this so Carlsbadians can take pride in their participation. And of course the trails, and those who use them, benefit, too.

Agreed Debe Maxwell, CRS  Seems fair to me!

Endre Barath, Jr.  - sadly some simply do not take the care of them as they should, with trash and dogs. Some of the work, however, is cleaning up and trimming brush.

Hi James Dray  - I bet they would be the first to yell about it.

It certainly makes it more pleasant Brian England  Hiking in your temps is not my idea of fun, unless you are out at dawn, perhaps.

There are lots of benefits Patricia Feager  - I hope I can go to the next one!

Michael Jacobs  - sad but true. But the trails I have been on were actually in good shape. I suppose there will always be some who leave trash behind.

And why not have volunteers to save the community some money Grant Schneider ?!

One would hope everyone would feel that way Inna Ivchenko . Unfortunately that is not the case.
