When fellow ActiveRainer, Belinda Spillman posted a blog titled, “Show Us Your Summer Blooms and Crops – An ActiveRain Challenge,” I knew I had to participate.
It has been my long held belief that a primary joy and privilege of home ownership is the ability to grow delightful flowers, or vegetables in our gardens. I have enjoyed this activity for decades.
During the long California drought, it wasn’t nearly as much fun, because every time I turned on the water hose I either worried or felt guilty. However, more than abundant rains this past winter, have relaxed those anxieties this season.
In April, I planted a variety of tomato plants, and a couple types of squash – Zucchini and Yellow Straight Necked. I regularly compost one side of my house where the tomatoes grow, and in another garden area with good soil the squash flourish. Other than watering and occasionally feeding with a little fish emulsion, I don’t do much.
Along my fence line I have Star Jasmine growing. They delightfully perfume the air in the months of April, May and June. But, in summer time, there are grapes which emerge through the vines to provide a tasty treat.
For homeowners who have the space, I highly recommend the relaxing activity associated with planting and harvesting a little of your own food.`It helps answer the call lurking from the agrarian roots most of us have!
I take pictures for the purpose of remembering fond times. I do not impose copyright restrictions on this photo, so you may feel free to use, or distribute as you wish.
