I have the best neighbors a homeowner could ask for.  We borrow eggs, we carpool, we watch over each other's homes while on vacations, most of us even have a key to another neighbor's home.  I truly live in a fantastic neighborhood and the single most important reason I haven't moved is because of the wonderful people who live around me.

Yesterday, my closest neighbor family faced an emergency with one of their children.  Their sweet little 10-week old baby boy was taken to the hospital after it was discovered he wasn't breathing.  Dad had to stay home with the two oldest children while mom and the baby rushed to the hospital for ugent care. The doctors and nurses say the baby will be fine, but might require a hospital stay anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks. Beth, my neighbor, knows that her baby will get well soon but as she focuses on helping him get better, her other two children and husband are going to be missing mom and all she does for the family for a little while.

That's when the idea of Neighborhood Care Teams hit me.

We all know of the neighbor who is in need from time to time.  Some neighbors care for elderly family members, some bring babies into the world, some have a medical procedure that sends them home to recuperate.

We all want to help somehow, right?

We can.  Here's how:

In my neighborhood, there are 214 residences.  Of the 214, I am going on a mission to find at least 6 neighbors that are willing to prepare homecooked and ready to go meals that just need to be heated and served, 3 that are willing to care for pets, water the lawn, check the mail or bring in the paper and 5 more that are willing to call the neighbor in need before they make their own trip to the post office, pharmacy, dry cleaner or grocery store. That's 15 of us, including me and I plan on coordinating the effort along with some cooking when the needs arise.

Sounds easy enough.

I'm challenging my fellow Active Rain friends to take 20 minutes of each day for as long as it takes to assemble their own Neighborhood Care Team.  I think every neighborhood has someone that is excellent at "spreading the word" so be sure to contact that person first.  If you think of any other helpful ideas or ways to go about assembling a Neighborhood Care Team, please share them!

What a great way to get to know your neighbors!  Will you rise to the challenge?

Great idea, Ladybug!  I already take care of my elderly neighbor and it would be nice to have a helping hand.

Amanda - I think this is a stellar idea and I hope people will seriously consider taking you up on this one.  As for our neighbors, we don't have the blessing of friendly and caring people around us, unfortunately.  We tried so hard when we moved to this area to establish some friendships to no avail.  We even took fresh-baked cookies around and passed them out with our kids.  In our case, we have had help from our church with the types of things you mentioned here, and we try to participate in this as well.

After the birth of my second child my Sunday school class dropped dinner at my door step every night for two weeks.  I will never forget what a blessing that was.

The mercy ministry at our church did this for us as well, and they also brought meals for several weeks and did our laundry and dishes when we first brought my mother-in-law to our house back in October.

Great idea!  We only know the neighbors that are directly across the street or beside us.  This is a great way to get to know your neighbors and to help eachother out.  I think a neighborhood should be looked at as a small community within a community.

Amanda, what a great idea for those that don't already know and have relationships with their neighbors - make new friends and gain a support system at the same time.  We are fortunate to have a pretty close neighborhood where we all know one another, but this idea could help bring people even closer.  Fantastic!

You should set up a blog for your neighborhood.. This would be a great way to post wants, needs etc.. They can all check it as needed, add a calendar of events, write about block parties, list and compare neighborhood services etc. etc..

This is good stuff. When we lived in the condo, we were constantly running errands and such for our elderly neighbors.  We're out in the country so it's not quite the same but still a darn good idea.

Melody -- Accept the challenge!  I can't think of a better way to give back to the community and be the Realtor of choice in your neighborhood!

Jason -- I hope you'll try again!  If it fails, try again and again and again!

Jason & Melody -- That's what I am talking about!  When those meals start showing up, it is just a small gesture that goes a long way regardless of the need!  We never really know what kind of support system our neighbor has in place.  Let's be the support system!

Andrea -- Our own neighborhoods are about as local as it gets!  If we start with two neighbors and then spread the word, the community spirit is alive and well in no time.

Lisa -- I don't know why I didn't think of it sooner.  My neighbors are always helpful, but I think we can always do a little more as a group than we have in the past.  So far, so good...the neighbors I have spoken to sp far are all on board!  (As if anybody can actually say no, right?)

Nick -- That's a great idea.  I think I need to get with my HOA block captains and ask them to keep an eye and ear out for when neighbors have a need just in case people are uncomfortable asking for help.

Jesse -- You are awesome to have helped and I am sure your neighbors miss you!  It's not just the elderly that need help from time to time and that's what we should keep in mind as well.  My neighbor in need at the moment is usually the one who runs around helping people...now it's her turn to be taken care of.

I agree with you... everyone could use a helping hand.  Come to think of it, I can remember a time when this was very much the norm... neighbors helping neighbors.

Amanda,

Wonderful idea! Are you in a neighborhood with lots of younger people? I would love to find a close group of neighbors. I love your thinking.

You know I am also blessed to have great neighbors, Amanda.  This kind of thing always just kicks in all over the canyon when someone needs help.  We get to know and rely on each other, mainly because we are small and occasionally get removed from the world by our every now and then weather related road closures.  The email networks that form to help out are almost instantaneous.  All it takes is an helpful hand and an open heart.

I know you will be a dynamo in your neighborhood.  I hope your tiniest neighbor will be okay!

Wow Amanda!  That's some awesome stuff you've got planned.  We have a pretty good HOA but nothing quite that amazing!  You are indeed an inspiration.  I'll see if we've got something like that set up.  Me and my neighbor Bob pretty much watch each other's houses when either is gone, check mail but I don't ever think I've cooked him a meal when the missus went out of town.  Thanks for sharing and reminding us that it's okay to be neighborly.

AMANDA - So many people get to know their neighbors through the use of recipe cards and the like.  What you're doing will truly help people out, and I'm sure that if a real estate need should arise, you will be on their short list of people to call.  Great idea, Amanda.
