Joseph Glass was born in Colchester, in Essex, England back in1791. He moved to London, working as a builder. By the 1820’s he had a chimney-sweeping business.
During that time in history there was a society named the Society for Superseding the Necessity of Climbing Boys founded inn 1803. It wasn’t until 1828 until Joseph invented a device made from cane rods connected with brass screw joints thus creating a flexible rod which coped with bends in the chimney. A wheel was fixed to the top to prevent jamming.
He was a strong campaigner against the use of boys being employed in sweeping chimneys. Due to his campaign in 1834 the House of Lords passed the Chimney Sweepers Act 1834. The Act was the start of the British Parliament passing a law to stop child labor. He died at his home in Brixton, he was 76.
Until tomorrow I wish you happiness, pass on a smile..
