I just posted a blog challenging Active Rain Members to help out in their local neighborhoods.  From there, I cruised over to Adam Waldman's Blog that offers great ways to save on gasoline.  Adam's blog inspired me to add to the concept of Neighborhood Care Teams with a way to save on the expense of gas as well.

When I go to the grocery store, I like to stock up.  I plan ahead for meals and try my best to make sure I have every ingredient I need.  No matter how long my list is, I always forget that one item.

You know what I am talking about.  It's that one item, small as it may seem that can make or break that favorite dish.  It's the recipe that calls for 3 eggs and you only have 2 or that cup of milk that your husband just drank straight from the jug.

WORSE....you forgot you ran out of coffee...or toothpaste...or bread...or just a favorite snack.

Why not call your neighbor before you head out to the store and ask them if they need you to grab a quick item for them since you'll be out and about anyway?  My guess is that a lot of gas could be saved by just being a good neighbor and I bet they'll return the favor.

Call it the Express Lane, 3 items or less!

Can I be your neighbor?  i am forever forgetting things at the grocery store.  Seriously, this would be a great way to help save gas.

Amanda...

We have become so used cheap gasoline that we never give it a thought. Whatever happened to just borrowing a cup of sugar or flour? My mother and her friends did that all the time. They had to,

They didn't have cars!

Great Post Amanda! That is the way neighbors were years ago. Most of us don't even know the names of our neighbors in today's world. Your neighbor hood sounds like fun. I'm moving!

We do this with our neighbors, and you know what?  Sometimes when you lend those chocolate chips or that bit of vanilla, you get some cookies in return!  YUM!

Jesse -- You already are like a neighbor!  Can I borrow a beer cup of flour?

Richard -- My neighbors and I are always borrowing something from each other.  Sometimes it might be something weird that we've forgotten.

Becky -- I'll let you know as soon as a house comes on the market in my hood.  It doesn't happen very often.

Natalie -- Let me know how it goes!  Hope you don't get any weird requests!

Elaine -- That's a whole new way to cause cookies to be baked.  (I'll have to share that one with hubby.)

If you are already going, Amanda, I could use some diapers.  Pick some up for the kids too, if you don't mind.

We'll be lucky if or neighbors talk to us if Jesse keeps waking the neighbors up with that blasted chainsaw.

Alright, somebody clue me in on the bat signal thing.  All Jesse can do is laugh when I mention it.

I know my neighbors to my left and they are great!  But I have no idea who anybody else is.  I remember growing up and I knew everyone.  If I did something wrong, my folks knew about it before I made it home.  Good tips there Amanda.  Now, you got any butter?

Heck, in that case... here's a cup of flower and a beer... I say it's time for a block party.

Paul --  you are a complete nutjob but being the good friend that I am, diapers are on their way.

Kathy -- the Bat Signal is supposed to summon my super hero friends into hijack mode.

James -- I have something here that looks like butter but the people around me tell me it isn't.  I can't beleive it's not butter.

Jesse -- Hi Neighbor!

Hi Amanda...

Looks like I'm not the only doing this with a neighbor :)

I do the same for her when I have to go out.

AMANDA - Thanks for the mention and the link.  This really is a good idea.  With gas topping $4 per gallon on Long Island, anything that can be done to cut down on trips to the store is worthwhile.

I must be wierd because all I ever wind up borrowing is dog treats - you wouldn't think there would be such a thing as a treat emergency but there is! Luckily I live in a very "doggie" neighborhood!
