1874 - A patent for the first practical sprinkler system for fire protection was given to Harry S. Parmelee. Objecting to high insurance rates he had determined this was the best way to protect his piano factory and reduce his rates.
1896 – Bridgeport, CT inventor and industrialist Harvey Hubbell received a patent for his pull-chain electrical light socket, a design that remains popular to this day. (ad pictured above)
1909 - The American ship Arapahoe is the first to ever use the SOS distress signal off the coast of Cape Hatteras, NC. when it broke a shaft, and began drifting. The SOS signal was chosen at an international conference in 1906 due to its distinctive pattern and ease of transmission, it did not represent “save our souls”.
1924 – First Newsreel pictures were taken of U.S. presidential candidates, President Calvin Coolidge, who won the election to become the 30th President, Hiram Johnson and Robert LaFollette.
1942 - Actress Hedy Lamarr and composer George Antheil receive a patent for a radio guidance system for Allied torpedoes using a frequency-hopping signal that could not be tracked or jammed. The principles of their work later became the basis for modern technologies in wireless telephones and WiFi.
