Five Gardening Secrets of a Westchester, CA. 90045 Realtor, Endre Barath, Jr.
Secret Number One: Just having books about gardening does not translate to being a good Gardner. As a background, I come from a long line of East Coast and European urban dwellers. Hence, gardening has been a dream that I had known for at least two generations but never reached its full potential. My father invested in a gardening encyclopedia consisting of six to eight volumes and numerous other gardening books. They looked good on my parents’ bookshelves, but little did that book knowledge translate into his outside garden outside of having a lush green lawn in front of his home.
Secret Number Two: If you know that you are not good at something hire someone who is.
When we relocated from Boston, MA to Los Angeles, CA we noticed that most homeowners in Los Angeles did not tend to their gardens, unlike we were used to seeing it in the suburbs of Boston, MA. Most homeowners in the Boston suburbs tended to their gardens with a great deal of pride and some competition as to who had the nicer gardens and the prettiest flowers.
Once we bought our home in Westchester, CA we determined that we needed to hire a good gardener if we wanted our lawn and landscaping to maintain its luster.
Secret Number Three: Notice I say above, we needed to hire a good gardener. Like Realtors, not all gardeners are created equal. Some are very good at blowing leaves around and cutting the grass even if the grass is dried brown and cut to the nub, whereby cutting it even more only creates a dust cloud. Our first gardener did just that! So, Diane and I started walking the neighborhood to see who had the best-looking gardens. We saw a house that was fantastic and there was someone attending to the garden and asked if he could come to our home and give a proposal as to costs to make it look just as nice as this one. Well surprise, he politely told us that he is the homeowner and he only does his own home😊. Clearly, he did not just buy books like my dad to look nice on the shelves. He really has a green thumb. That was what led us to our first gardener – a very nice young man/salesman who took on our home and that of our neighbor. It didn’t take long to realize that he had a very good presentation but lackluster results. Our neighbor let him go first, and replaced him with a wonderful dependable gardener. I’m happy to say that we employ that same gardener now too and have been very happy ever since.
Secret Number Four: If you live in a climate that requires a great deal of water to maintain a nice garden, may I suggest try to plant drought tolerant vegetation😊. Water and a little TLC will go a long way in maintaining a great garden.
Secret Number Five: Speaking of water, a great sprinkler system with a simple timer is just as important as the above four points. When you have a busy life and work many hours, the last thing you want to do is water your garden.
