Gardening in Tredyffrin Easttown

When we moved to this house, it was very dark, in the first summer here I took down about 80 trees of varying sizes which covered mainly what is now the back lawn. We could see no form to the garden, no plan. We had no idea of the way the sun tracked. But as we cleared, light entered and we tackled the vines and the scrub which had been allowed to take over.

As I have said many time, Trudy is the gardener and planner. Things get moved constantly if she thinks they will do better elsewhere. She is never finished. I dread if she goes to a garden center as I know she will come home with something that would look good just there darling. She had a plan and it has taken a while but today we can enjoy it although she is still working her plan it is not finished yet.

So these photos are a testament to her planning, and her skill at replanting, and increasing perennials year over year. The dry stacked stone walls you will see are my creation, after we took them down and dug out behind to create a path and a patio. The upper patio was my son's creation, the lower one we created. If you don't realize it we live on a hill on a pie shaped lot with the road wrapping around our house, the lower portion is wooded, we added the she shed two summers ago, building it ourselves without killing each other as we did it. I am occasionally allowed to sit there when invited. Enjoy..

Our upper patio All the stones were on the property, shaded area loved by hostas and helibores, if we can keep the deer away.

Dry stacked stone wall

We dug this out and moved it back about 6 feet to create a path from the top patio as we call it to the lower patio and the lawn. Believe it or not that lawn behind the wall was all trees when we bought the property.

SunflowerLower patioTrudy created this little oasis which we call our Butchart Gardens, it sits between a dry stacked wall and the house and was originally lawn, we created a gravel patio surrounded by brick edging and a host of perennials. It rained last night so everything looked a little washed out today.

The she shed

We have two windows and under each Trudy plants up these window boxes, the light was given to us by a friend and we find an identical one in a yard sale, we electrified them and put a small Staffordshire cat figurine in there, it lights up on a timer each night. Trudy uses candles in the she shed, but that is another post entirely. Back to the upper patio.

Pots and plantersMost years we have a host of pots and planters, this is a fine example, with elephant ears and something below which I forget the name of, I am told it is a caladium. These always amaze everyone, and every year we have more of them spread around the garden.

We have this delightful hydrangea which does flower this time of year to shield us from the driveway when sitting here.We have two climbing hydrangeas one on each patio which for some reason have not flowered the last two years, have to find out why.

hydrangea

Hope you enjoyed our back yard. It is one of the reasons why we don't need to travel anywhere because it feels so lovely and we enjoy just sitting here with a book enjoying nature around us.

It would be fun to walk around and explore your wonderful oasis of a garden in the woods!  I'm surprised to see the elephant ear plants growing there... they look so tropical.

I think Trudy, and you, have done a marvelous job on your yard. It takes time and planning but the joys of a beautiful garden are boundless, especially in the spring and summer.

Georgie Hunter R(S) 58089 they are bulbs and we take them each year, store them over the winter and put them back in the spring, they seem to like our humid weather and hot summers. Every year we have new bulbs which we keep sharing with friends and family.

Thank you Lou Ludwig

Debbie Reynolds we sit there so often and say to each other who needs to be anywhere else.

Jeff Dowler the planning is all Trudy, I only provide themuscle when needed, I have been known to pulkl planys up thinking they are weeds, so even that duty I am not allowed and I promise I did not do it on purpose.

Inna Ivchenko it is fun to see what people grow around the country, all depends on your zone, that much I do know.

Michael Jacobs that is such a nice compliment, we just found this cantaloupe self seeded from our compost heap. Hopefully it will get enough sun and love to ripen
