What got you started at real estate investing?

We belong to several real estate investing groups in the Pittsburgh  PA region.  WPAREIA (Western Pennsylvania Real Estate Investor Association) and some of there sub groups like the Westmoreland Landlord Group, Cash Flow Group (Rich Dad Poor Dad Cash Flow game), and ther groups that we do go to as much like the Rehabbing Group, the Commercial Group, the Creative Financing Group, and others.  There are also other organizations like ACRE (American Congress of Real Estate) and Apartment Association of Metropolitan Pittsburgh, and yet others.  We meet alot of people that go to these groups but yet they never take that first to get started.  We are always asked where to start?

I got started when I was 29.  I was working out of town 4 days a week and home for 3 days a week.  It got to be boring those 3 days off so I was thinking of things to do and "create wealth" was something on my mind.  Just about everything I looked into about getting wealthly was from real estate.  So I bought a few courses on ebay and started buying houses.  I'm now 45 and full time into real estate investing and have a company with my partner and we also have a property manangement company where we manage over 100 properties in our area.

What got you started in real estate and why?  I'm looking forward to the comments, I love learning how people made it, tried it, and doing it.

I started out selling foreclosures in 1989 so I was working with investors. I like what I saw and started buying but also committed to selling investments only.

I started out buying properties and doing fix  and flips (I never did the work, had to hire everything out) and was buying everything I could that was not listed.  Once we bought all the fsbo's we could in our areas we started looking at listed houses and making offers that the realtors cound not understand and/or tell me they was not allowed.  I got fed up with that so I got my license and started buying listed houses the same way... The only difference was we were putting the Land Contract, Wrap Around Mortgage, and Lease Option terms on the MLS sales agreement and started getting them accepted.  Most realtors in the Pittsbugh PA area do not understand those ways of buying.
