Curb Appeal: Santa Barbara Style Landscaping With Sculptural Plants

Abutting the Public Market in Santa Barbara is newer luxury condo building. Like with a home curb appeal enhances the value as well as its appeal.  One of the planters has a new varietal of compact bougainvillea (as pictured above) bushes.  The flowers can be found in clumps on the branches.

The trunk that shares the planter space is the tree whose branches are leafy fronds.  Its spare look contrasts beautifully with the lush stalks of the bougainvilleas.

To the left of this planter take note of a smaller one in the corner with a burgundy sword tree.  This tree adds color and an additional sculptural element and draws the eye to the corner.

The landscape architect understood how  that adding sculptural plants emphasize and soften the boxy lines of the building.  We are certain they even factored in the shadows that the plants would cast on the building.

Since three of our favorite vendors are in the Public Market, we are here often, and each time we appreciate the curb appeal as well as the intelligence behind the plant selection.

Beautiful! Plants can do much to soften, to enhance, to camouflage, adding beauty and interest while so doing.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel The landscapers did a beautiful, well-thought out job. I have never seen bougainvillea in that color before.  I've seen purple, red and pink here.  They're very pretty.

That is a very interesting tree, I really like it.  Is it just me though or do the blooms seem a bit dull?

Wow, you are so right. This is stunning. Love the soft colors, textures, and especially the play of shadows against the stark white wall of the building. Very thoughtful design.

Hi Alexandra and Ron -- I believe you may have previously shared other photos of this building.  The glimpse of the architecture has an almost Irving Gill-inspired feel to it and the landscaping compliments it nicely.

How interesting Ron and Alexandra Seigel - I notice landscaping designs quite often and it's so interesting to what designers create that really POPS and what is, just there.

Brian England they are a faded gold color.  It seems this varietal of bougainvilleas tend to be muted.  Next time I am at the nursery store, I will see if there are bright ones.

Hi Ron and Alexandra Seigel, the little bit I could see, the building itself is beautiful, landscaping goes very well with the backdrop, the clean lines of the building compliments all the curves of the plants. Just beautiful!

Ron and Alexandra- seeing your photos reminded me of a home that was being built in our old neighborhood years ago. It was massive and done in style that used a lot of stucco. It wasn't until they added landscaping, much like what is depicted above, that the house began to look less massive stucco and take on a softer appeal.

It's landscaping genius at work here! Functional art in its own way. The shadows are magical, an added aha. Sort of Feng Shui with plants.
