Gardening in a Community Garden in San Francisco

By
Real Estate Agent with Compass CA DRE# 01215160

8 years ago my husband and I bought our future home, a condo in San Francisco, right in the heart of everything, where we could go almost everywhere we wanted on a daily basis by foot, or by public transit if need be. The only drawback: no space in which to have a tiny garden.

8 years ago I put my name on the waiting list for a garden plot at Fort Mason Community Garden, a nice 20-minute walk from our condo.

6 years ago we moved into our condo, and our new lifestyle.

6 months ago--after a 7-1/2 year wait--my name made it to the top of the list, and I had my plot of ground, to plant as I saw fit!

I have many gorgeous examples of what people have planted in their 5' x 20' plots. (Like the dahlias shown above, San Francisco's city flower I'm told, or the roses, below.)

roses at Ft Mason Community Garden

Many of my initial thoughts were scrubbed since my plot has more shade than some plants would like. Finally, last weekend my teen-age granddaughter and I set out some plants that I hope will do well.

This year I'm working primarily with flowering plants, with a couple of strawberry plants and some herbs (rosemary, oregano, sage) which I inherited and some free bok choy seedlings. Using the Sunset Western Garden Book as a guide, we added:

  • newly planted abutilonAbutilon (an evergreen shrub known as Flowering Maple, or Chinese Bellflower) (pictured at right)
  • Gardenia (evergreen shrub with fragrant white flowers)
  • Gaura (a perennial that has pink/white flowers branching off stems that wave in the breeze, reminding me of butterflies) -- this is a "keeping my fingers crossed" choice, hoping I have enough sun.
  • Begonias - with big, showy red flowers
  • Fuchsias - ones I can train upright, with red & white blossoms. These have long been favorites of mine, and make me think of ballerinas or fairies!

If I'm fortunate, and if I put in the time and effort, perhaps my plot by this time next year will be one of color and beauty, maybe attracting some hummingbirds and butterflies to this organic garden.

I write about the benefits of gardening in a community at another time -- they are many!

Hi Anna Banana Kruchten, CRS - this is my "investigative and planning year" at my garden. I suspect gardening might take on a life of its own.

Belinda Spillman I wish those dahlias were in my plot -- perhaps next year! One of the fun things about a community garden is that I get to appreciate the beauty and innovation of other gardeners.

Hello Joe Pryor -- as my business coach is fond of saying, "it's a beautiful life - make it count."

Hi Michael J. Perry - when several of our freeways in San Francisco were taken down after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, some of that land was turned over to various community gardens, other used for much-needed housing.

Most gardeners in this community garden grow a combination of vegetables and flowers Grant Schneider ; I suspect I'll follow suit, although I can buy organic produce year round at nearby farmer's markets and Whole Foods.

How beautiful, Lottie. I've had great luck with fuchsias in Sacramento. I planted mine about 10 years ago, and they are really doing well now. They face the north up against the house. Sometimes I have to cover them with netting in the summer as you know our summers in Sacramento are so danged HOT.

But I've had zero luck with gardenias. They need a special kind of soil, and even though I've treated it, fertilized, they all die on me. Hopefully, yours will do much better.

I am impressed with your perseverance and desire to to do this. I can't think of anything I have waited nearly 8 years for. Maybe my death. I know a bit morbid but again.... Cheers cvc

Too funny, Curtis Van Carter - had I not been interested in having a garden plot after my long wait, I could simply have said "no thanks." But--I thought, since my knees still somewhat work, why not?

Lottie Kendall - You exemplify the fact that where there's a will, there's a way!  I love that you and your husband set a goal and achieved results by downsizing into a condo but that you didn't give up on your dreams about having a plot of land to plant your flowers. These flowers are gorgeous! Isn't it amazing what a community can do towards beautification efforts and fulfilling other peoples dreams? Not only did you get your wish come true, others did too without the manual labor. The world is better when one person makes a difference, and that person is you!

Rebecca Gaujot - I must 'fess up -- the roses and dahlias aren't in my plot; the small freshly-planted abutilon is! I popped down there today (combined it with the partial eclipse) and am happy to report the gardenia, abutilon, gaura and fuschias look happy; the begonias, not so much.

Wow, seven and a half years wait - that is dedication! The garden looks pretty and inspiring. There is a community garden, within a walking distance from us, I have to check how participating works. I just look at it and admire it, but never even thought that there may be a waiting list.

Great post, I enjoyed reading it.

Thanks, Steffy Hristova - it's amazing how quickly 7 years ago by - I didn't know if I'd have any interest in gardening when/if I made it to the top of the list. So far, so good. The community garden aspect is quite fun, and new to me.
