So, you are out looking at homes. Your Real Estate agent leads you to the front door of a great looking home, and opens the door for you. You might not get a chance to see what that front door looks like, especially the door knob.
Door knobs are the gatekeepers to our homes. We really can't see what the inside of a home looks like unless we use a door knob. They are one of those most overlooked icons of homes. If ignored by the seller, they can combine together to sink any potential buyers interest in the property.
For instance, homes built in the 90's around here used much in the way of the color gold. The door knobs, hinges, faucets, and lighting fixtures all tended to be brass or gold colored. These gold items have become sign posts for a non-upgraded property.
When I consult with a seller, on of the first things we do is survey how the property will look to a buyer. If all the door knobs are gold, I will suggest changing them out to brushed nickel or oiled bronze, depending on the look of the rest of the house. Does this really make a difference? Absolutely! You might be surprised how your home changes when the gold is removed. Depending on budget, we might update a ceiling fan or light as well, but door knobs can be replaced easily, quickly, and relatively cheaply.
So when you decide to place your home on the market, make sure to make peace with your door knobs. They have the power to gang up against you in the sale of your home!
