On Sunday August 19, 2012, my phone rang at about 9:00 am. I saw that the call was from my late brother's home phone. Before answering the phone I said out loud, "This can't be good news". My brother had been diagnosed with cancer in May of 2012 so I fully expected the call to be news about him. You could have knocked me over with a feather when I heard this from my sister-in-law: "Sybil, I wanted you to know that your mom passed away last night."
My mom had been in an assisted living facility for a few years but as far as we knew she was in pretty good physical health. She didn't have cancer or heart problems. She was 85 years old when she passed away on the day that would have been my late father's 88th birthday if he were still alive. I like to think she decided that she didn't want another year to pass without him and so she simply went to sleep and didn't wake up the next morning.
