Summer Blooms

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with New Paradigm Partners LLC EB #1326335

The timing for Belinda's Summer Bloom contest couldn't be worse for us, having moved into our newly-built home just 6 weeks ago. We're just getting started with our landscaping, but we have managed to install a sprinkler system, sod and mulch.

The rest is on the agenda for this fall and next spring, and we're really excited about it. It took us 10 of our 12 years at the old place to get it right, learning from our many mistakes, but we have all of that experience working for us now. We're much wiser about gardening and it shouldn't take more than 7-8 years of mistakes this time around.

All of the garden centers will be having huge sales in trees and shrubs in a couple of weeks, so we're currently arguing about what kind of trees we want and where they should go. But at least we're in agreement about some of the shrubs. Fall is going to be a busy time in our garden.

In the meantime, here's a look at out current green thumbery:

Sod

This is our sod - 100% bluegrass. It's not really the best choice here from a water conservation standpoint, but we don't have a lot of it, and it grows well.

Gorilla Hair

And here's our mulch. It's called Gorilla Hair, and is a redwood bark product. We like it because the hairy strands intertwine and make it less susceptible to blowing away, so it lasts about twice as long as the regular stuff.

Weed

And because Belinda wants 3 pictures, here's a weed. These guys are coming along nicely, but their days are numbered - eventually one of us will get tired of looking at them and just go pull them out. We're waiting to see who blinks first.

Dick,

Great looking dirt, and that dandelion is one of the best pictures I have seen.  Happy Sunday, A

Dick- this has given me a much needed laugh so thank you!!!  I love your mulch and while sometimes I think that grass is highly over-rated, what you have looks good!  As for weeds, well...my problem with them is that they tend to keep coming back. Can I get in on the pool of who blinks first?

That is a nice green, we have had a couple of rainless weeks and my lawn is looking a bit brownish, but 2 inches Friday should green it up Dick Greenberg

I'm sitting here smiling, Joe.  I know that feeling of trying to complete a task, when the resources simply aren't there.  However, I suspect in future years that ground will produce some really fine blooms.

These are terrific photos of your yard in progress. Never heard of gorilla hair mulch but what the heck! As far as weeds, I hope you luck out and only have this one. We seem to grow weeds as well as we do other things.

The weed picture made me laugh. Oh how fast those little plants can shoot up and the thing is they don't even need water to look healthy and thrive.

I love your post and your sense of humor too! If that gorilla weed was of a different variety, you might have struck gold! Oh well, I guess you'll be working still to pay off your new house.

Your take on this contest was the best!!!

I have never heard the term "Gorilla Hair", Dick Greenberg ... but the positive features is offers sure make sense.  Especially anywhere around Chicagoland, near the "Windy City" ...
