This Industry Has Changed - But then again they all do

By
Home Stager with www.Staged-to-Sell

It would be nice if someone would take a poll.

Some impartial person or company who can put their finger on the pulse of our ever changing industry.

You know that pulse we all have, all industries that is, that regulates how fast, how hot, how cold we are running.

How many stagings are you doing this week? 7? 5? 2? 0? We'll, if we are honest, we can look across the country and see that the Stagers in the "Hot" markets are still staging 5 times a week and the ones in the "Not so hot markets" aren't. Right? Hmmm....Maybe not.

Ok, then we would look at how business across the country has changed. Are you renting your furniture? Do you have a small or large warehouse? Do you have full time employees with benefits? Do you use subcontractors?  Are you marketing your company? Are you making money? It seems we all have different business models and the ones that are succeeding in this business are constantly changing theirs.

Good, now we have the beginning of a pulse. We see that the pulse changes not by state, not by town, not by street, but by person. It changes by person because we are all different. You might be in the middle of Stockton (The foreclosure Capital of the country) and still doing gang buster business. You could be in the middle of Chicago and be dead as a dime.

We are now at an interesting place in our industry. We have been around long enough to have a track record. Long enough to work through a few up and down cycles. We have been around long enough to expect a level of professionalism and standard from each other and our businesses, and to join together to set the bar.

We are so lucky to be in this business at this time as we are able to help the ones coming up in it. We are lucky to be in the position to offer advice and to help others. We have been around a while now and know where the newbie's have been and where they are going.

There are some Seasoned and Successful Staging Professionals around the country who are contacted on a regular basis from stagers who seek them out for advice and guidance. As we look through Active Rain we see dozens of them are now offering coaching services to help the ones who are now coming up through the ranks. They charge for this service, because as we all know, you get what you pay for, and quality is something that comes with care. We spend a lot of time educating our Realtors and Homeowners on the value of our staging service, and now we are valuing each other's experience enough to pay for it.

It's up to you not the market, not the economy, not the competition. It's up to you. Reach out and find one of these coaches in your area. Take the steps to reach your goals. Don't give up, change and you will succeed.

Kym, Thanks for your wise words. I am a new stager, but always open to change. I don't know what I would have done without the AR stagers.  So many great coaches right here on the rain.

Kym ~ I so agree with you. Our companies have a face and its usually ours. An exciting, fun, outgoing and most important that "can-do" positive attitude will take our buisiness a looong way. Great post

Kym - interesting post.  It is great to realize there are so many different approaches to success in the same industry.  I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know many of you through Activerain. Most of what I have read or discussed verifies that I have made the best choices for me and my business and it's helpful to share info about struggles and successes with others.

Very good post Kym.  If you don't keep moving and growing, you can't expect to survive.  It's always good to get tips & direction from someone who's been in the business a while.

I agree with Donna, there are so many talented people here, it is always interesting to see which people spend their time in jealousy rather than valueing each other...and don't know what a resource they have right in their own backyard.  It's more common in your own area where people don't want to share as much as they see you as competition or "the enemy", when alliances would bring a better business to all of you in the same marketplace.  Interesting to watch each region and see how people embrace or alienate each other.  It tells the story of how their business will do long term.  Small thinking brings small business.  We prefer to entertain BIG thinking that's why we're here on AR....to learn from people like you and create BIG business.

Fernando, you are right, that's why I read everything you write, positive thinking is contagious.

Tori - yes, fun to watch the industry evolve, isn't it? And who succeeds and who fails, I don't like seeing people fail, but they usually shoot themselves in the foot, we don't have to do it for them.  And, the resources are out here for them to grasp, they just don't or won't.  Too bad they don't see it.

Sorry Kym just had to comment on each of these comments for different reasons.  GOOD blog...actually made me stop and reflect on those we know and watch locally too.  I am so proud of those who are doing their best to get the knowledge they need to succeed and it's fun to help them. You know who you are.

What I find fascinating in my own business is how it cycles in clumps.  So, this week, I have been approached by 2 entities about simply renting them furniture and accessories down to the knives and forks while they live in this area for a year.  Each just wants to arrives with their clothes.

I find this ironic.  I'm always blogging on about the "add water and stir" mentality in our society at the moment.  So, it's only logical, I'd get these people who don't want to even pick out the hangers, the china, the glasses, anything?  Do I provide a mob and broom, too?  How far do I take it?

Ever changing.  Wouldn't want it any other way.

Nice post, thanks. Jj

Kym ~ Change is good!  And seeing how our industry evolves is fascinating.  None of us could ever become bored -- there is always something new to learn.  (Btw I'm taking the "refresher" CSP course again in June, can't wait.)

Wow Kym, what a great post.  Linda and I both dearly love being involved in the Learning and helping part that you referred to in your post.  It's fun to learn and try new things, but it is extremely rewarding to help others needing insight from experiences.  Great message....

Kym this was a good read. Like Donna I am new to this business.  I have benefited tremendously from the great advice and sharing that goes on amongst many of AR's experienced stagers and fellow Newbies.  I have avoided some mistakes and have had good choices validated.  Change is good, continuing to learn and improve only benefits us all.  Thanks.

My been gone from A/R for a day and missed some great comments and a feature :)

All great comments thank you! Juliet - isn't that great. We can find so many ways of generating revenue in this business. We are not JUST Staging professionals/consultants. The more ways we can come up with multiple revenue streams and increase all staging professionals value to Real Estate Agents, Homeowners and to each other the better the industry will be as a whole. All the eggs in one basket just isn't sane and can get a bit boring. Isn't that why we don't work in corporate and started our own business in the first place :)

thanks for posting the link Shell I will fill it out when I have a second and hope everyone does.

Kym, Thanks for reminding us to invest in ourselves by spending money, time and effort in coaching and goal-planning.  No sense in reinventing the wheel!  Sometimes it takes learning someone else's perspective to help us understand, and utilize, our strengths in a business context.

The key is being ahead of the trend, so you'll be here next year meeting the needs of the next generation of homeowners/sellers.  And most of you will still be here because you handle your business like a business and do what it takes to stay abreast of things.  Good for you -- the survivors of this market make the future of the industry.

You make such valid and right on target points Kym. Every market is different but individuals make the difference in any situation. You have to define for yourself what "success"means but you also need to continue to grow and educate yourself in order to remain fresh and feel alive.

I think coaches are a great source of inspiration and guidance for anyone - no matter where you're at in the game! Think of any great athelete, they don't get there by themselves, it's a team effort and one of the major players is their coach.
