Eclipse 2017 -
Awe in Clayton GA - A Memory for a Lifetime

Totally amazing to watch!

The picture taken at mid-point of the eclipse...

Watching through the special glasses (of course) while within our group of families (about 300 adults and children) on a clear and lovely day in the Georgia mountains will remain a highlight of my life.

Imagining what the people of the first or third or fifth centuries might have thought when this truly awe-inspiring event occured passed through my mind as the sky got really dark and the temperature dropped.

Possibly the first Western reference to came from Lucien in 932 BCE
"… a kind of light is visible about the rim which keeps the shadow [of the moon] from being profound and absolute.

If you have an opportunity to see a total eclipse --

I suggest you make plans ahead to go there and see it.

The next total solar eclipse viewable from the United States will occur on April 8, 2024, and will enter at Texas and exit from Maine.

Words cannot describe the sensation of looking up and watching as the shadow slowly spread across the sun until the corona was visible. Then, in a brief snip of time, the movement reversed the image as the moon passed across to the other side. Awe inspiring ...

BTW -- a statistic ---Clayton, GA has a winter population under 20,000 and summer of just over 30,000. An estimated additional 30,000 people attended the event in Clayton, GA on August 21, 2017. (from comments by the Mayor of Clayton)

No wonder the usual 2 ½ hour return trip to Atlanta
took over six hours from Clayton today! An additional 5000+ extra people were in Dillard. Then add who knows how many more that were absorbed by the remaining towns near the Georgia epicenter of the total eclipse over Clayton.

A recording device launched by balloon for a Georgia Tech experiment should get more data. It was to be retrieved via a GPS signal when the balloon burst and released the equipment.

Someone else took the photo above.  Although often I am the one who is the family event photographer, this time I decided to keep all my focus on the family members with me (eight of us in all) as we experienced the event together.

I left the photos to others this time. So much fun - Murray, Abe, Azzi, Yonah, Anna, Vince, Lucia and me -- nestled together in our chairs and lying on our towels as part of a group of 300 people together on a softball field!

So glad we were all together!

Photo credits: A. (you don't have to give me credit) C. for sun/moon and A.F. for baseball field.

Thanks - I didn't take it but I did want to share it - doesn't do justice to the experience at all. In fact, I can hardly find wordds to describe the event. As we watched, we could see the changes in the "shape" of the sun. All the best - Lynn

Lynn glad you got to share that special experience.  Here in CT we did not see much of a difference, but maybe someday we will experience a total eclipse of the sun as well.

Hi Lynn- a friend drove from South Florida to Columbia SC just for the eclipse. He's planned it since the last one. And he decided to leave the photography to the experts and just enjoy the moment.

We had 98.88 at our house and it was fine. We didn't want to brave the throngs of traffic to see the total eclipse. It was still cool to be part of the history. D
