I'm a make it happen kind of person
Sometimes we see things and say "that's too bad" or "why doesn't somebody do something?" Well maybe that somebody is us! Take a tip from Mike's post on just another way to be a better citizen of the world.
I'm a make it happen kind of person
I'm a make it happen kind of person. I don't understand why certain needs go unmet in a community. If there are the resources available to change circumstances, then circumstances should be changed.
Last August, my company had the privilege of providing tactical vests for five local K9 officers with the Frederick County Sheriff's office. This past week, the Sheriff's department adopted a new K9 officer and one that was too small last year has grown into a full sized officer. Again, my company will be providing tactical vests for our newly commissioned K9 officers, as well as our city police K9s.
This was a community need. Was it expensive? Compared to the cost of one of these trained K9s, it was a bargain. When I inquired as to why our K9s didn't have vests, the officer overseeing the program said the funds just weren't in the budget. What? In a community of 156,000 we couldn't find the resources to protect these $30,000 investments, and that's the cost per K9 officer. Well, I'm a make it happen kind of person. So, that's what I did.
A story recently ran in our local paper about a budget shortfall in a key local non-profit. It's substantial. This time, I can't just write a check, but I can pull out all of the resources, contacts and favors I can muster. I ran into one of the board members for the non-profit in a local retail store last week, and I ran an idea I have to meet the 1.5 million dollar shortfall. We'll be meeting up in the next few weeks to see what we can do to make it happen.
There is no reason in a community the size of mine that a single legitimate need go unmet. I personally don't think the community should depend on the government for these kind of needs. We wouldn't have done that a hundred years ago, and there is no reason to do so today.
My last comment to this board member was, "With all of the smart people in the community, there is no reason this need can't be met. Let's make it happen." He agreed, and we're going to do it. That's a blog for another day, but the bottom line is I'm a make it happen kind of person and I bet you are too. Let's go out and make good things happen in our communities and watch the positive results roll in.
