Eclipse Mayhem in Charleston, SC

I have to admit I wasn’t jumping on the eclipse excitement wagon.  Living in Charleston, it was eclipse mayhem.  That was the topic of conversation for weeks leading up to the big day.  You could feel the excitement in the air in the Low Country.  Eclipse glasses were flying off the shelves so much so people were selling them on Facebook groups!  People and neighborhoods/subdivisions were throwing huge eclipse parties.  As the days were getting closer the number of visitors to Charleston were steadily climbing!  They decided to close schools, daycares, work and even the banks were closing early.  People were saying the traffic would be worse than the 4th of July.

The day before I still wasn’t as excited and did not purchase the glasses. I know it was once and a lifetime but I figured I could watch it on TV. I know I sound like scrooge!  Newspapers articles were saying we would have as many as 2.2 million people in Charleston! I heard that people were even renting out rooms in their house for as much as $399 per night.    It almost felt as crazy/frantic as New Years Eve of 1999 when people were unsure would happen once the clock struck midnight for 2000. Would our computers be working the next day?!

The day of our girls had no daycare and we ventured to our neighborhood party, which was a blast. They had food/ice cream trucks, popcorn and a bouncy house for the kids.  Everyone had their glasses ready except for us!  When the eclipse finally happened, we went outside and our neighbors were nice enough to share their glasses. I think they felt pity for us as they saw my husband did an arts and crafts project with a box to be able to see the eclipse.   I must admit even though I wasn’t excited, it was amazing to see it!  As the moon slowly covered the sun, it got dark and very eerily like.  It got so dark the street lights came on.  Unfortunately, it was cloudy so we couldn’t see when the moon covered the sun but you could feel the temperature drop.  As fast as the moon covered the sun it was over.  I am glad I was able to see it, really was amazing experience.  Once in a lifetime as they say!

I wish I had pictures but I was terrified of looking up and using my camera.  However, here is an article of the best pictures of the eclipse Click here

I understand it was a learning experience also, but it just seams to have been blown way out of proportion.
