Pasadena Garden Party
With its many tree-canopied streets and wonderfully diverse architecture, it is not difficult to find many beautifully landscaped public and private spaces in the city of Pasadena.
For example, more than 1500 varieties of roses, camellias and annuals can be found at the Wrigley Gardens on the grounds of Tournament House(home of the Tournament of Roses). And with approximately 120 acres, the Huntington Botanical Gardens in the nearby city of San Marino has more than a dozen specialized gardens on its park-like grounds that was formerly the residence of Henry E Huntington. A more minimalist approach can be found at the Sculpture Garden at The Norton Simon Museum.
In the past I have mentioned the Arlington Garden. The grassroots effort by neighbors and the community came together as a waterwise public garden on land that has been both a grand mansion and a freeway right of way.
The Arlington Garden is a three acre magical urban oasis. Located at 275 Arlington Drive(northwest corner of Arlington Drive and Pasadena Avenue) it is just east of South Orange Grove Boulevard and Millionaire’s Row. It is open from sunrise to sunset seven days a week and is FREE of charge.
This week I stopped by The Arlington Garden. The long dry summer has turned the colors here from very vibrant to softer more subtle tones. Perhaps less picturesque than other seasons with our temperatures approaching 100 degrees, the numbers viewing the garden may be fewer, yet it remains a nice urban respite.
I hope you enjoy some of the finds from my visit. From the classic labyrinth design to the intimate spots to quietly reflect, the garden offers opportunities to view more of the beauty that makes Pasadena such a special place. To visit. To live.
