Flowers - The Music of the Earth

Belinda Spillman's August Challenge has brought us the gift of so many wonderful colors, blooms and harvests this year! It's been one of my favorite challenges this year as I am a firm believer in Henry Ward Beecher's quote:

"Flowers are the sweetest things God ever made and forgot to put a soul into."

Camilla (Yuletide)Flowers have always been a passion of mine. I wouldn't say that I have a green thumb - I just read instructions well and do what is necessary to keep whatever I plant alive! I find digging in the dirt, great therapy...and then we also get to savor the fruits of our labor - either in beautiful flowers, gorgeous green grass, statuesque trees, flowering shrubs or maybe even a few herbs & vegetables. There aren't many things in life that seem so rewarding to me in both the work and the results!

Lady Bird Johnson said, "Flowers in the city are like lipstick on a woman - it just makes you look better to have a little color."

And, color I do LOVE in my yard! I'm also drawn to it around our beautiful city as well - I've often joked that Charlotte should be known as the "Green City" instead of the "Queen City!" Our climate lends itself to fabulous blooms year-round. There's something that is blooming all year long but, during the spring and summer months, the Charlotte landscape simply explodes with color.

Here are a few shots of my yard during spring and summer months:

Azaleas in bloom

Above: Azaleas (Encore) that come back several times of the year - late winter, spring, summer and early fall by my front porch.

Hydrangeas

Above: Hydrangeas mixed in the backyard landscape for a bright pop of color during spring months.

Knockout Roses & Hydragnea

Above: Knock-Out Roses & Snowball Hydrangea - both were planted, along with everything in this backyard less than 3 years ago. This has been our best 'visual' year yet and look forward to next years' color-burst!

Middle backyard - continuedAbove: Better view of the Snowball Hydrangea - and, of course, one of our favorite backyard guests!

More backyardAbove: Blooming Hostas and petite roses (which bloom all spring & summer) and of course, the must-have in Charlotte - Crepe Myrtle tree.

View from patioAbove: View of backyard from the sun-room & patio.

View of backyard from verandaAbove: View of the backyard from the veranda

Coleus, one of my favoritesAbove:  And, of course, I have to have a few potted plants - here, in front of the gardenias (which have already bloomed this year) - on the sidewalk from the veranda to the patio.

The harvest

Finally, (above) our small, raised garden outside our sun-room, where we grew cucumbers & tomatoes this year - and the bounty was plentiful!

Hi Debe, I love your selection, beautiful, vibrant colors. I read the instructions and do what I'm supposed to but my plants die for some reason. I truly do not have a green thumb.

What beautiful flowers and a gorgeous yard, Debe. You are blessed to have the weather like we do that allows for abundant color year-round. It was always the tough part of winter in New England - no flowers!

LOL "Will work for food," huh Joe Pryor?! I wish I had the talent to do that - I just get lucky and as I said, I read up on what grows here best, what requires a lot of water and what doesn't etc.

I would love to be able to take you up on your offer but, I'm afraid you'd get the short end of that stick, Joe! LOL

Have a wonderful weekend!

I'm the same way, William Feela! I have such a passion for them - they will stop me in my tracks to take a closer or longer look! Forget taking time to smell them - I just love admiring them visually!!

Oh, it definitely is a work in progress still, Sheila Anderson - I have some holes to fill and those holes need color - not green! I look at it with a critical eye every single day and always think of something fun to do with it in a week or so! LOL

LOL I approach my garden like work - it must be perfection  and it's always a work in progress, Gail Robinson!  I'm far too critical of my own work!

Now Debe gardening is one place where you should let go of the perfectionism.  It's a great trait for work, but gardening should be glorious chaos and play time!

Oh, they're absolutely my favorite as well, Brian England! I never tire of them - they are good in soups in the winter and on sandwiches during the summer!

And, I'd be happy to share with you - when will you be visiting Charlotte?!

Thank you, Beth Atalay - I'm working on adding a bit more color - I have too much green right now and it bugs me! LOL I don't have a green thumb either - I just get the right mix of soil and rely on mother nature - and water! LOL
