MOULTONBOROUGH WELCOMES YOU!

72℉ Partly Cloudy Rain 51℉

GOOD MORNING FROM THE BEAUTIFUL LAKES REGION OF NEW HAMPSHIRE - Here's your weather summary for Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2017 -

We stuck out our necks yesterday to predict a pleasant, mostly sunny day in the Lakes Region yesterday and we were wrong.  Big time wrong!  A high cloud cover stayed over the area and the day had that "end-of-the-season" dreariness to it:  Not many summer tourists out and about, cool enough to have us reaching for a light sweater, gray as far as the eye could see.

We managed nine holes in the late afternoon at our beloved Ridgewood CC but there was no joy in it.   The AM today looks like more of the same, with unseasonally cool temperatures and overcast skies. Weather experts, however, predict things will look better in the afternoon with skies turning mostly sunny, temperatures climbing to the low 70's and winds very light and variable.  Don't blame me, if it doesn't turn out that way.  I"m just the messenger.

Skies are expected to clear as we move into the evening and there will be a definite chill in the air as nighttime temperatures slide into the 50's down to a low of about 52°.  The wind will remain light and variable.

Moultonborough General Store InteriorWe're headed over to the Old Country Store & Museum this morning in Moultonborough for some tasty blackberry jam and a hunk of the best double-aged Vermont Cabot cheddar sliced from the wheel. We might even dip into the pickle barrel to fetch us some brined cuke goodness.  The folks at the Old Country Store are kind of old fashioned when it comes to marketing, so don't expect an online shopping experience with what is alleged to be - and may very well be - the oldest continuously operating general store in the United States ( it has a confirmed barter transaction dated Nov. 30, 1781).  You pretty much have to go there to shop or know what you want and phone in an order. They will ship. You know those old fashioned metal-handle vegetable peelers?  We got ours at the Old General Store more than a decade ago.  Still skins spuds and cukes as good as the day we brought it home.  If you haven't been, you're gonna like this place.  Guaranteed.  For what it's worth, check out the Old General Store here.

Sunrise/Sunset (Laconia): 6:08 a.m. - 7:24 p.m.

While emergency responders continue to wrestle with Harvey's devastation of the Texas Gulf Coast, their counterparts further east are monitoring another potential weather threat to the Atlantic coastal region.  Her name is Irma.  For more on this growing tropical storm, click here.
