Green Lawns for One More Month, a Few Simple Tips

Labor Day weekend is on the horizon and with it comes the ushering of Fall.  It is important to remember that we are approaching a brief period where lawns will be hard pressed to stay green one more month.  With temperatures cooling and a widespread rumor of winter coming earlier and harder for Colorado, you have limited time to keep your grass looking healthy.  In Highlands Ranch property management, we take many steps to mitigate this period, as tenants are chiefly responsible for the yard and we are needing to back them up with services.

Any areas that appear yellow or brown may need a sprinkler adjustment.  With winterization happening in just a month or so, it may not be prudent to have a sprinkler company come out to your property unless you see an ever-widening area appearing.  If it is something small you can leave that be until the grass goes dormant anyway.  Alternatively, you can always hand water yellow patches and use Revive.

Be sure to use the appropriate blade length on your mower when going through and mowing the yard.  If you cut down the blades too short it will cause the grass to die faster.  Mulching lawn mowers can prevent this by leaving piles of grass that help retain moisture.  Be sure not to over mulch as that can suffocate a yard and achieve the same end.   You will want to rake away any excess clumps of grass once you have finished mowing.

If you have any problem sections of your yard that you can’t get sod to take or that part of the yard is your neighborhood bathroom for all the dogs then you will need to consider Xeriscaping.  This is a great alternative to perpetually dead lawns and scan still fit the aesthetic of the neighborhood.  If you are in a community with an HOA it will help you receive less HOA violations for dead grass.

Blue Olive Properties handles an extensive lawn and sprinkler maintenance program for every home in our Highlands Ranch property management portfolio.  Be sure to call today to hear any details.
