The Active Rain monthly challenge this August asked us three question about our best business practices. I started in Real Estate nearly 32 years ago. Real Estate when I started compared to Real Estate now, is both completely different and the same all at the same time.
Part 1: Tell us 1 of your BEST business practices from your 1st year in business: My first year in the real estate business was 1985. I started right off in new construction. I worked the open house and met lots and lots of people. Many of who had a home to sell before they can buy. The leading job I was given was going to their homes, determining what they would sell for and getting them on the market and sold. The practices back then was looking through MLS books twice the size of a phone book. There was no computer MLS, there were no online tax cards and it was easier to drive the paperwork over than to fax it.
Part 2: Tell us who your Most Powerful mentor was (or still is)? My most powerful mentor, teacher and boss, was my mom. She had a a large independent office and I knew real estate was for me. The day after I turned 18, I passed the NH test. Most commonly I would hear how easy i had it. The reality was far from that. I was expected to do more, learn faster and do what i was suppose to do. I was given every starting job, the gopher ( Go for) this and that, as if you remember, no email, no scanners, no computer MLS, no email as It was go get it and go now.
Back then a young man may not know why I was given every job in real estate, why she was so tough on me, but it molded me. I was her shadow, i attended every appointment, every showing, every inspection, every appraisal and every closing. I was taught that nothing but the best personal service shall ever be given. I was taught to respect the job and think ahead, to head off issues. I not only listed and sold homes back then, but cleaned up the model, cut the grass, swung a hammer, pre qualified buyers by using a book of interest rates without a calculator, filled out loan applications, appraised homes, mirrored home inspectors and city inspectors. This gave me an outlook and experience in real estate you can not get today in your average online class.
My mom has retired, but i have to say, you have to see the smile when she asks me how my day was and i tell her I listed this, I sold that or helped Mrs. Smith into her dream home. She sees her in me, making her proud every day I have reached such a high level in the real estate business by doing the old fashioned things taught, 30 years ago.
Part 3: Tell us about 1 Business Practice that you are Currently Attempting to put into place but haven't quite gotten there yet. For me it is giving old fashioned personal and professional service. In a world heading to discount brokers, fast or quick service, many get left behind in real estate where breathe, slow it down and do it right is needed. By being there through each step of the buying and selling process. I am doing what consumers want. When asking what I have not got quite right, well.... everything is a learning process. My answer would be nothing, as i learned to adapt as teh market changes to give the most to those who hire me.
My infamous saying is that every Buyer or Seller should not choose just any agent, choose the BEST agent for the job. My philosophy is simple, provide more personal and professional service to guide my clients through each step of the buying or selling process. All Agents are not created equal and every buyer or seller should take the time to hire the BEST not just the biggest. Those that hire me, find a dedication like no other.
