Most of my colleagues know me as a real estate agent and have heard about some of my adventures and experiences related to my business. What many of them do not know is that I am musical, I have played two instruments and have sung for most of my life and that one of my musical mentors was the minister who married me and Walt.
My musical ability came from my mother's side of the family. My grandfather played the violin by ear and my mother had a beautiful singing voice. Mom often sang when she was cooking dinner or doing laundry. Sometimes when I was a teenager and had friends over at my house, they would hear my mother singing and ask if that was a record or the radio.
When I was in high school, I sang in the girls glee club and the acapella choir. I also sang in church choirs. I have sung solos and duets and have been in ladies singing groups as well as a member of a gospel quartet.
Life has a way of coming full circle and that proved to be true with a person who had a big impact on my music. His name was Doug Allen. He was a minister of music at our church in Fernandina Beach Florida for about six years. I was the chair person of the search committe that found Doug. Doug taught me a lot about how to enhance my voice during that time. He and his wife loved Fernandina Beach very much and planned to move back to the area when they could.
Shortly after I moved back to Fernandina Beach in 2012, Doug and his family moved back as well and ended up buying the house directly across the street from me.
When Walt and I decided to get married we asked Doug to marry us and we had the ceremony in his back yard. It was a small and very intimate ceremony with only 14 people attending.
In this photo, Doug and his wife Kelli are on the right. My older son is on the left and my two grandaughters are in the matching blue dresses. My daughter-in-law was behind the camera. The others attending were very special friends, my sister-in-law, whose husband was my late brother, and her grandaughter.
Isn't it interesting that music and a good friend had such a unique part in our wedding?
