Grandparents Day, First Sunday After Labor Day, A Brief History
by Silicon Valley REALTOR Michelle Carr Crowe
Grandparents Day is celebrated on the first Sunday after Labor Day annually. This holiday was initiated by a mother of 15 children, 43 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild named Marian Lucille Herndon McQuade of West Virginia. She and her husband were married for over 60 years.
Mrs. McQuade, who characterized herself as "just a housewife", began lobbying for a Grandparents Day back in 1970. By 1973, her state of West Virginia proclaimed a Grandparents Day. By 1979, the first presidential proclamation of Grandparents Day was made by Jimmy Carter in 1979. There are three purposes for National Grandparents Day:
. To honor grandparents.
. To give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children's children.
. To help children become aware of the strength, information and guidance older people can offer
To anyone lucky enough to have living grandparents, honor, celebrate and spend time with your grandparents today on Grandparents Day.
