WHAT IS SO GREAT ABOUT BEND, OREGON?

Why is Bend being recognized across the United States as one of the best places to live? I hope I can enlighten you all to the beauty of this gem that is also my home.

Recreationally, Bend and the surrounding areas have so much to offer.  Surrounded by mountains, Bend is located in Deschutes County in the High Desert of Central Oregon. The terrain is mostly desert with thousands of acres of protected USFS lands closeby. This provides for excellent HUNTING and FISHING. Deer, elk, antelope and turkey hunting are popular here and bring in many hunters from all over the U.S.

The many local lakes offer an abundance of BOATING, FISHING, and WATER-SKIING opportunities. Central Oregon also boasts an elaborate system of underground caves for SPELUNKING ( caving ) as well as several unparalleled settings for CAMPING or SIGHTSEEING.

For obvious reason, this area is home to a high number of outdoor enthusiasts. Mt. Bachelor and Mt. Hood are but a short drive from Bend and offer some of the best SNOW and CROSS COUNTRY SKIING, SNOWBOARDING, SNOWSHOEING and SNOWMOBILING in the country.

Just a little north of Bend  lies Redmond, the hub of Central Oregon. Redmond is home to the legendary Smith Rocks State Park which offers world-class ROCK-CLIMBING and HIKING.

We also have 21 public and private courses in Bend and the surrounding areas, offering unparalleled GOLFING. Thousand of acres of BLM protected lands give the DIRT BIKE or ORV enthusiast miles and miles of trails to enjoy.

In any season, there is always plenty to do here. These recreational opportunities are just ONE of the many reasons I choose to live and work here. Click here to read What's so GREAT about Bend, Oregon? Part 2 and find out more about this thriving community.

I've never been to Bend but my next door neighbor moved there a few years ago and sure loves it.   Sounds to me like you have incredible natural resources plus a fabulous place to live.

Nice pics. I have some friends living up in Portland that have been trying to get me out there to visit. I've been holding off because I want to see several areas there and I'll have to add Bend to the list. -Charles

I grew up in Bend and never went back after I left for college. To me, Bend is paradise. I love being there and I feel I belong there. Someday I will return. Those of you that are there are very lucky. There is no place in this world as beautiful as Central Oregon.

I am Kirk's wife and he is living here in Southeast Louisiana  where we met, fell in love and got married. If that had not happened, I am sure he would have taken any opportunity to move back to Bend. He is staying here for me. He has taken me to visit Bend twice and it is absolutely beautiful (although I don't think they eat much crawfish there). Anyway, when our blended family is all grown up, I intend to give my husband back his dream and move to Central Oregon with him.

Bend sounds like just a great place. We have lived the last few years in Texas but are originally  from Northern Calif. We have had the privlidge of spending some summer months in Sunriver and had great family times playing golf, boat fishing, fly fishing, tennis and great food. Have met so many nice people.

Now we are at the point of seriously considering retirement and think the Bend area might the the place for us. We love what we know so far and may begin the search in the first qtr of '08.

Any comments??? Love to hear from someone with similar interests or experience.

I am a single father with 2 daughters living in Central CA but I want to move to Oregon for better family and quality of life living. Bend seems exaclty what I am looking for. How tough would it be to get acclimated there (jobs, housing, sschools, etc.)? Any information is greatly appreciated.

My wife is from Oregon and i am a born and raised Texas boy, we are currently in Austin, Texas, we visited her family in Oregon and Washington a couple of years ago, we were not in the Bend area but i fell in love with the entire Oregon area that we visited while we were there with maybe the constant rain in Portland being the exception. I made the comment that i could see myself leaving Texas and living in Oregon someday and she lit up like a fire work on the fouth of july, so now.... we are waiting for our older kids to finish high school in the next few years and we will be making our move to Bend or the immediate area. Really looking forward to turning in these one hundred days of one hundred degree weather we have during the summer for some weather that you can get out in and enjoy. Maybe i can turn my kids into "DUCK" fans and they will want to make the trip as well!
