Taking a break from Real Estate...... (Hey, we've got to live too!)
The undisputed King of the Blues, B. B. King, played in town the other night and we were there!
In a little theater, we fittingly enough had tickets for row "BB".
At 82 years old, B. B. might have lost a little of his onstage swagger. But none of his trademark string bending, nor any of his vocal range was among the missing. This guy's still got it!
If you've ever seen B. B. live in concert, then you know the deal. If not, here it is.........
Before every B. B. show, his guitar "Lucille" sits alone center stage and the crowd all sneaks in front of it for a picture with the legendary ax. Well, my dear friend Christy (who had never seen B. B. live before) and I felt obligated to do the same. So, we saddled ourselves right up against the stage when we noticed that there were two seats in the 2nd row center that were oddly enough vacant. Being the avid concertgoers that we are, we decided to plop ourselves down and hope that no one came for them. Sure enough, the lights went down, B. B. came out, and for the next 2 hours, we were 10 feet from the master himself! 2nd row center for a legend! It doesn't get any better than that!
B. B. was really great that evening running through all the classics that you'd expect and hope to hear, the band was as tight as ever, and B. B. told lots of stories from "back in the days".
After the show, B. B. got up, thanked the crowd repeatedly, and threw out little guitar lapel pins and B. B. King world tour necklaces. Christy and I were fortunate enough to get one for each of us to help commemorate our evening.
But the real thrill of the evening came when we walked right up to the king of the Blues himself, reached out and got to shake his hand. We were still in a state of disbelief as we were heading home saying to ourselves over and over, "We got to shake B. B.'s hand! How cool is that?"
It was an evening and a memory that will live on for us forever.
I've seen the King many times, the last about 3 years ago in Atlantic City. As always a great show, though not as much energy as he had back in the early 80's when I first saw him, but always a thrill! (The Thirll Is NOT Gone!) Thanks for sharing!
I'll never forget our evening with B.B! Thank you for being adventurous and landing us in the second row and good catch with the lapel pins and necklace!! The thrill of that night is NOT gone......
BB King the most amazing performer I think I have ever seen. He gave me the nickname Angel about 25 years ago and when I saw him ten years later he picked me out of the audience (5th row center) and said: "Angel is that you? Good to see you again and Angel this one is for you". One day I will tell you all about it. Suffice it to say I have seen him stay at a venue for two hours AFTER the last set so he could shake all hands and sign autographs for anyone that wanted them. I wish I had thought to bring my camera one of the countless times I have seen him. However most venues don't allow cameras. He is unlike any other performer and when he goes I will be very sad. He truly is the King of the Blues.
