"Iron Man" = The Best Movie I have seen in awhile

By

Last night, my wife and I had a "date night" (which is really just married couple talk for "no children with us for a couple of hours").  We went to the Alamo Drafthouse on Sixth Street to see "Iron Man".

I must admit that I was worried that I might not like it as much as some of my friends who had already raved to me about it.  However, I would highly recommend this movie to anyone.  We are actually thinking of seeing it again this weekend, and that is indeed a rarity for me.  I can't remember the last time that I saw a movie twice in the theaters, but I was probably in college or even high school.  We will probably take my son, and my mother-in-law has also expressed interest in seeing it.

The cross-generational appeal is understandable.  My wife and I jokingly discussed the movie on the way home last night, stating that we would only recommend this film to those who enjoy good acting, comedy, action, and coolness (not really a word probably).

This film is the biggest summer blockbuster to hit in the past several years, and with good reason.  Robert Downey, Jr. is perfectly cast in the lead role, Tony Stark, the super-wealthy heir to a high-tech weapons empire.  He creates the first Iron Man armor suit out of necessity, but I won't divulge any spoilers here in this post/review.  I had forgotten that he was nominated for his role in "Chaplin" a few years back, but his acting skills are on fine display here.

Gwyneth Paltrow was lovely as Stark's sexy assistant, Pepper Potts.  The chemistry between Paltrow and Downey was palpable, and they both have a great sense of comic timing.  Jeff Bridges was imposing and somewhat scary with a shaved head and gigantic beard in the role of Obadiah Stane.

The cool factor for the technology and special effects in this film cannot be overstated.  Simply put, it was some of the most amazing stuff that I have ever experienced as a movie-goer.

Don't miss this movie while it is still in theaters, or you may kick yourself later.  You will not be disappointed.  In my mind, Iron Man has replaced Batman and Spiderman as the coolest superhero around.

Thanks for sharing!  I am really looking forward to seeing this!  I have a couple of others on my list, but with the price of movie tickets these day I like a heads up!  Thanks for taking the time to share!

My husband and I went to see it last weekend too.  We tried tog et one of our boys to go with us, but he is 16, and  there is no way he will go ANWHERE with us if he doens't have too!

I had never heard of the character Ironman.  We both loved the movie, and I gotta say, Robert Downey Jr. was a nice piece of eye candy.  But I always did love the bad boys!

We haven't seen it yet but might go Sunday afternoon... I don't think I can take the theater on a weekend night.

Jason, well that's a stellar review.  However I doubt I'll see it in the theater.  When I was younger (and single) I used to rush to catch all the new blockbusters at the movies on or close to opening day.  These days my wife and I prefer Netflix and watching from the comfort of our couch.  Then again, we don't yet have kids from whom we need to take a periodic break.

Brian - I am the same way - we very rarely see movies in the theater, and Netflix is awesome.  However, this is one movie that deserves to be seen on a big screen if you can swing it.  I would never even consider going on an opening weekend, but try to catch it if you can while it is still in wide release - it is worth it, in my opinion.

Jason- I rarely go to movies anymore. I have heard from many people though that this is indeed an amazing movie to be seen in the theater. I am going to go check it out tonight.

Best,

Melissa - Your comment made me laugh.  You didn't wake anyone up.  Pam was already up, and I was awake, but still in bed.  No worries.

Jason, the buzz on this movie on the Friday after it came out made me see it the first weekend. I very much liked it too.

Jason- While I was quite entertained in the movie and like you said the special effects were great, I was once again disappointed but not surprised with Hollywood ideology being suttely entered into the storyline, the graphics, certain scenes and certain mockeries. It was low key but it was there. I don't want to spoil the movie for anyone. SO I will keep it low key.  I get tired of rich people being made out to be the bad guys by Hollywood, especially since they are such hypocrites themselves. While I loved the romance and love in Titanic, the undertones of 'rich is bad' went overboard, no pun intended. The movie portrayed that you can not have fun unless you are poor and that  rich people are boring and stuffy. This permeates through society and false beliefs in people and then as a society very few rise above the poverty mentality because they were taught that rich is bad and evil. Ooops, getting on my soap box here.

But our son just loved the movie and went back to see it again a second time. He now wants to make an iron man suit. He took a metal juice bottle lid, added some sticky stuff to it and then taped it on the center of his chest! Pretty clever, for a 5 year old. He is now drawing the designs for the suit so he can start making one.

Jason:  I was ready to forego this one until I read your post.  Sounds like it would be enjoyable for both my husand (the sci-fi freak) and I (the comedy lover).

Jason:  We saw it last night, spontaneous decision.  We try to take a walk every evening and it was raining so we decided to go to the mall and take our walk inside.  We never made it to the mall.  We saw the movie instead.  Awesome!!  We both loved it.  I totally agree with having to see it in the theater.  I loved the robotic assistant, and how it seemed to have a relationship with Tony.  Robert Downey was perfect for this role.
