I blog regularly and I always run spell check before I post. It was brought to my attention today by a dear friend of mine that I have been spelling alot wrong, well I mean not alot of things but actaully the word "alot". I have been spelling it "allot"? which one is correct? I always thought it had one "l" but when I use the activerain spell check it tells me to spell it "allot". I have been retraining my brain to spell it wrong?! Help someone! which one is correct?

Neither is correct, if you're usiing it to describe "how much".  In other words, if you're using it to say how much you like something, for example, write it as "a lot".

We all use the phrase "I like it a lot", although that's not the best way to say you like something "very much".

To "allot" means to distribute something among multiple parties.  It's the root word of the term "allotment".  So it will appear to be correct in most spell checking utilities.

Yes -- it is "a lot."  But, I am not the world's best at spelling. However, we are in good company, because I heard that JFK wasn't good at spelling -- and he was not only president, but graduated from Harvard.

Another word people get caught with is "irregardless" -- no such word. Just "regardless."

I once proof read an article for a newsletter and ran spell checker and totally missed the last comment on the article, the author meant "Gook Luck", but it was printed as "Good Lick". Spell checker said everything was OK . . . talk about being embarrassed . . .

Michael C. thanks for the comment.

Now I see I confused spell checker by not putting in the space between the a and l so that is why it thought it should be allot! Thanks so much for the english lesson everyone I obviously needed it!
