Frivolous Foodie Friday- Shhhh -Don’t Tell Barbara Todaro

Let me preface this by saying that this is not a post that we want Barbara Todaro to read.  Let’s just direct her to some of our other posts…. Hear sh-h-h-hthat Brian England!

I just read and heard on the news that a study showed that taking a 2-week break from dieting can actually boost weight loss.

In my food world, I’ve eliminated the word “diet” because it makes me feel as if I’m depriving myself of something. What I prefer is a lifestyle change in how I eat.

Earlier in the month, Dick Greenberg wrote about his 5-2 Diet which is working for him. I like it because once again, it doesn’t make you feel as if you’re depriving yourself.

I must confess that I jumped the gun a bit on this new scientific report over the course of Hurricane IRMA.

The Girl Scout in me and the survivalist (ha) needed to make sure that we were well stocked with food and beverages.

So before the storm, I made sure that we had fresh salad and fruit but I also included crackers and cheese.

We ate well because a friend also staying at our “bunker” loves to cook so we had marinated flank steak the first night. Also on our menu were Kielbasa and mac & cheese and peanut butter and pita pockets.

Alas, on Monday after the storm I felt compelled to take advantage of this stressful situation we were in.

junk food We went to a few of the stores that were open  (we were in search of milk for my friend’s two-year-old) and somehow a package of Hostess Cupcakes (which I’d not eaten for at least 4 years), Cheetos (a must for any road trip), a bag or two of potato chips, Nabisco Chocolate Chip Cookies (I don’t even like them but for some reason they jumped into my cart) and a few bags of Peanut M&M’s ended up coming home with me.

Now having read the finding, I’m no longer feeling guilty for my frivolous foodie break.

What about you? What’s your favorite frivolous food?

Epilogue...we ate the cupcakes and I’ve decided I could go another 4 years before eating them again. The Cheetos and chips are gone. I gave the cookies to a friend staying with us (he has 2 children) and Larry saved me ONE peanut M&M!

Epilogue 2...I wrote this in jest but on a serious matter, there are many in the Keys and Puerto Rico and the islands who would welcome any food now, be it of the diet variety or not.  MARIA missed us, thank goodness, but please don’t forget the others who will need our help.

Hi Kathy I can  so relate!!! There have been times when we're so darn busy we don't take the time to eat normally and we pay for it later.  Today I was going to treat myself to a fresh croissant and a coffee as well as a banana nut bread for Gary. When I got home his banana but was pumpkin bread and my croissant was a chocolate croissant.  Years ago I would have like that but it takes way too sweet this morning. Yuck!!  Tastes do change over time.

Joe Pryor water is hugely important!!!  I don't monitor it but we drink a lot more than we used to.

Kathy... oh no, no, no... if I buy it, I eat it just because it's there. So my solution is not to buy it in the first place.

Sheila Anderson mine is probably potato chips or peanut butter anything.

Michael Jacobs it's hard for me to resist homemade desserts, especially birthday cake.

Sharon Tara you know, I felt the same way about the Hostess cupcakes too. Now that I've had one, I don't need one for a long time.

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty and that is why I don't diet.  I'd rather use moderation.

Sharon Lee I don't necessarily binge eat, I just binge buy junk food!

Grant Schneider put a homemade chocolate cake or homemade chocolate chip cookies in front of me, and I'm all in.

Anna Banana Kruchten,CRS,CRB,GRI You may be on to something. That Chocolate cupcake was a bit too sweet for me.

Brian England that is total dedication and determination.

Nina Hollander it depends on what it is!  But if it's cheetos and potato chips I will eat it.

Hi Kathy,

I agree with you on that 4 letter word diet!  It is a life style change.  If you don't consider it that, more than likely you will return to your previous weight.

Hi Kathy - Nice shopping plan for being shut-in by a hurricane. Mine would have been even less healthy - storms require goodies to distract us. Have a great weekend!

I must confess I was not as good as you during the hurricane. I had my fair share of junk food. My downfall is candy and ice cream. Thanks for sharing I hope you enjoy the weekend.

Kathy,

I am scratching my head trying to come up with something, other than the organic chips at Trader Joe's that I like with guacamole.  On occasion we will order a dessert in a restaurant, like we did this last Monday in Portland.  We had a dark chocolate cheesecake that was heavenly...Have a great weekend.  A

Several years ago when I worked at a software development company, I worked out every work day morning at the company gym before going to work.  And, I dieted.  However, I found it so odd that on weekends, when I wasn't working out, and eating in a little more relaxed way, that the scale would show I lost weight on Monday mornings.  I never could figure that out.

Kathy I always seem to have 20 pounds to loose. Eating so I feel full or energy and listening to my body are what I have learnt. At the moment I am eating lots of vegetables and very little meat, I also am trying some intermittent fasting as well. Desperate to cut sugar out of my diet as it makes me sore and if I can drop carbs I always feel better. Trudy always tells me to listen to my body, but it doesn't always tell you the truth.

Hi Kathy

Chocolate is my big downfall.. We are pretty good about eating lots of fresh vegetables and fruit, including smoothies for breakfast. BUT every now and then I splurg...like the coconut custard stuffed French Toast yesterday. But I walked 2.5 miles!! LOL

HI Kathy! Well, you certainly are entitled to a little 'junk' food after all you have been through! I'm with you - anything junky when I'm stressed typically satisifes my needs!

Sadly, my favorite thing in the kitchen to do is bake and make candies...so, the holidays are a dangerous time for me! As for my favorite - I have to go with ice cream. If it's something just to grab & eat while driving, it would have to be Peanut M&Ms!
