When Kosciuszko had completed his plans for the new fort at West Point, they had an unusual design.  Instead of installing all his defensive structures at the flat top of the palisades, he planned for separate smaller defensive outcroppings at half mile intervals uphill as the mountains climbed.  The Commander of the Fort at that time was Benedict Arnold.  Arnold was given the plans and promptly sent Major Andre to New York to hand them over to the British command in return for the promise of becoming a Brigadier General in teh British Army and receiving the 20,000 pounds.  Andre missed his ship and was captured.  the American interceptors, not knowing Andre had been sent by Arnold, returned the drawings to him.  he managed to find the ship and turned the plans over to the British command.  He was later captured.  When Washington learned of the breach of security, he had the highest outpost built first.  The Fort has stood uncompromised since that time.  Kosciuszko himself was rewarded for his skillful plans by being promoted to the rank of Brigadier General in the Continental Army.
