4 Easy Tips to Master the Art of Networking
So what's all the hype about networking to grow your business? Many folks I know are 'shy' about reaching out and learning how to network. And that group includes even the more experienced business people that I know. And then some folks are just born networkers - or so it appears. Most likely that isn't the case - this group was taught the how's and whys of networking - and followed that advice until they became comfortable in meeting new people and reaching out to new people - on purpose. If you put the time into building those connections, your efforts will definitely be rewarded. Here are 4 tips to to Master the Art of Networking that you probably have heard....but the real question is...have you actually done them or just thought about them?
Tip #1 Have a goal in mind
Are you there to gain new prospects, clients or referrals? Know what type of connections you're looking for. And then, all you need to do is find a couple of folks at each networking meeting and start a meaningful conversation. Over time you're network will grow and you'll actually look forward to going to meetings - with a goal in mind.
Tip #2 Be articulate, clear and genuine
When you're speaking with someone, impress them by asking questions about their business and then LISTEN to their answers. And for Pete's sake don't be talking only about YOU! There is nothing more annoying then folks who are all 'about them' and could care less about getting to know you.
Tip #3 Look and act professional
This is an obvious one, but don't forget this. Bring your business cards, and iron your clothes and leave your flip flops at home unless it's a beach network mixer like in the photo above! Don't be fooled: people always judge a book by its cover. And one more thing - dress appropriately for your profession.
Tip #4 Follow through - yes - Follow through
After you've met someone and had an interesting conversation and exchanged business cards, always remember to contact them and follow up in a timely manner. Call them, e-mail them.... just contact them and let them know you valued your conversation! Invite them to coffee or lunch and discover how you can help each other 'grow' your business. You'd be surprised how many people forget this one VERY HUGE network growing step.
