Michelle Carr Crowe's Habits-the Good, the Bad and the Ugly
by San Jose REALTOR Michelle Carr Crowe
Good Habit- Sleeping for 8-10 hours per night.
This habit of sleeping at least 8 hours per night was one of the hardest habits for me to develop as I am (and have always been) a night owl who needed little sleep.
When I learned that athletes who changed nothing else except to sleep for ten hours nightly increased their measurable statistics (e.g. increased running speed) by about 5-7 percent, I determined to try this myself. Hard as it is, I make myself get ready for bed early (e.g. 9 pm). Sometimes a 10 mg dose of melatonin helps my body relax.
Bad Habit- Wanting to Sleep In if I haven't achieved at least 8 hours of sleep.
As I became a teenager, I learned to enjoy the luxury of sleeping in on a Saturday morning. Now that I've cultivated the habit of achieving eight-plus hours of sleep nightly, my body rebels when I try to cut it short due to an early morning appointment. I find I sometimes have to promise my body I'll go to bed earlier that night.
The best solution is not to set up early morning appointments, as it doesn't benefit my health cycles.
Ugly Habit- Smoking.
As a child, I always thought smoking looked so glamorous-even though neither of my parents smoked. Once I was out on my own, I enjoyed smoking. I felt "cool". However, I didn't like the smell in my house or clothes, so usually smoked outside or only while out at a club.
Once I was pregnant, I decided to quit. Fortunately, a healthy child was more motivating to me than a cigarette. I was one of the few who managed to do it easily. More than 30 years later, I still don't smoke.
