Currently, Puerto Rico is dealing with the aftermath of experiencing the fifth strongest hurricane to ever land in the United States. For those that don't know, Puerto Rico is an island off the coast of Florida but past Haiti and Cuba.
With its distance, and it being a territory rather than state, people often overlook that it is part of the United States. Due to that, many people are still very focused on the Irma reliefs in Florida where most have power, resources, and places to go since they're connected to the mainland.
What is scary about Puerto Rico's situation is a majority of these people are stuck on their island, even though they have nothing left. Their entire island is without power, and one of their dams has cracked, causing further floods and troubles. Even more so, they are continuing to get flash flood warnings. This kind of devastation shows without a doubt that the island needs both our prayers and our help. Here is how we can give relief for our fellow brethern...
Global Giving
This massive international crowdfunding community that connects nonprofits and donors is providing emergency supplies like food, water and medicine to hurricane victims in Puerto Rico. The United Nations Children’s Fund, or UNICEF, is providing immediate support to children affected by Hurricane Maria. 90 percent of every dollar spent goes directly to helping kids. You can donate to UNICEF USA here.
Unidos: A Relief Fund for Hurricane Maria Victims in Puerto Rico
The Hispanic Federation, along with New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio and U.S. Reps. Nydia Velázquez (D-N.Y.) and Adriano Espaillat (D-N.Y.), set up this fund. One hundred percent of proceeds will go to hurricane relief and recovery efforts. You can donate to them here.
