Watch Out For Boulder Brains

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Realty 0575737

BoulderThere is an ancient story in Greek mythology  about a king called Sisyphus who was punished. He was to push a boulder up a hill only to have it roll back on him when it neared the top and this happened over and over for eternity.

Don't let the boulder brains of the world do this to you.  And you, don't be a boulder brain.

In real estate, and in customer service in general - these are the people who don't show up, or lie to you, or don't do the job, view you as an inconvenience, leave you on hold for extended periods of time, do not communicate well, or can't be reached or do not return phone calls or emails.

Can you spell

                             FRUSTRATION ??

We've all been there with shoddy service. Obviously, more than a bad day. It's a bad attitude and bad job fit. Do I have the wondrous magic wand to fix this situation? I don't think there is always one. Other than the bad referral and take your business elsewhere. Just like the market doesn't lie on what buyers will pay for a house, the market has to punish poor service with doing less business with the bad referral. And lest you yourself go down this path and give poor service, there is an emotional connection. People will tell 20 times more people about a bad service experience than a good one.

You be the one that is the shining star out there. Polite, courteous, returns phone calls, follows up, smiles, has a good attitude each day the best you can, takes care of people. I swear it is getting to be a rarity these days. Just doing the basics now makes you a superstar. Make life easy for your customers. Afterall, you are the one making the difference by treating people the way you would want to be treated. Has kind of a Golden ring to it doesn't it? : )

Hey Gary,

this is too funny. Thanks for taking the time to warn us all about the crazies that are out there.

You are right, none of us want to be a boulder brain.

I think we all can say if we have been in the business long enough that we have come across this type of person.

The golden rule is the only way to go.

Oh Gary, so true. Bad word of mouth spreads much more quckly and deeply than does a positive reference. Sad, but true!

Hi Gary, I'm with you on this one. Sometimes I wonder how these people stay in business.

Mana: It amazes me too, when they don't take care of the customer, who would do business with them? Maybe they are independently wealthy?

Hi Gary,

I wonder if Mr. Boulder Brain related to Mr. and Mrs. Blockhead or their children Ward and Wendy Whiner?

Gary - At least we can say Sisyphus was amazing for continuing to try!

Carol: The frustration with Sisyphus is he could never get it resolved. He couldn't get the boulder up the hill. I've had customer service people do this to me, and I just want to scream! I could not make progress with them despite MY efforts. I finally figured out it wasn't ME it was THEM. I am one that is entirely too patient. It can be good, and also not so good at times.

Michael: If more would practice the golden rule, we'd be better off.

I like the Golden ring image... Boulder... hmmm... I lived there for quite a few years... (and loved it), especially the mountain range as the backdrop to the city of 3+ square miles, called The Flatirons... although sometimes I call it Flatirony. Boulder is near the town of Golden. What a mythical land!

Gary, I can think of a few people who really need to read this!  Apparently they have not yet heard about "customer service."  A great reminder to treat everyone the way we'd like to be treated.

Gary, I think the most frustrating thing about our business is that you are only as good as your last 5 minutes.  You can give excellent customer service for 6 months, but have a bad day and screw something up on the 11th hour and boom.... that's it.  The public will never remember the myriad of things that you did correctly... they'll remember the day your son had strep throat and you forgot to return a phone call.  That's why we have to continually work at not letting our personal lives bleed over into our professional lives.  And incidentally, vice versa as well.  Which is a tad harder to do!

Mara: Ah, an Auburn girl with a Colorado heart. I know the Goldens, the Boulder areas well, God's country.

Carole: You set the example for them with your great service.

Susan: That was why I was saying do the best you can each day. Life is not perfect. Kids with strep throats happen, the dog has to go to the vet, etc. Cut yourself some slack in this area. I'll have to write another post on perfection some day as I have lots of observations in that area too. In sales, they say, you are right, you are only as good as your last sale. That what have you done for me lately, attitude. But it can be taken to an extreme.
