Please Remove Nozzle Before Driving Away...

I just stepped back into the office from paying too much for gas and had to share what I saw while draining my bank account.

For those of you with eyesight similiar to mine, this banner running across the pump reads "PLEASE REMOVE NOZZLE FROM YOUR CAR BEFORE DEPARTING".

My question is... Do people really not know to take the nozzle out before they leave? Or is this simply a distraction, to get you laughing, so that you don't notice how little we now get for our $$$ at the pump???

I have seen pictures of those riding down the road with the nozzle stuck to their car.

I believe those who think it is still full service station are the ones driving off with the nozzle.

LOL! Sandra, I've caught my husband three times in the last few weeks turning around and looking to make sure HE removed the nozzle before driving off!

A friend of mine drove off with the nozzle in the car and it was an EXPENSIVE mistake! Damage to car and pump was about $2500!

Oh noooo! It does have a purpose!

For the price we are paying for gas we should get a complimentary nozzle with a fill-up.

How funny! I haven't seen anything like this. I would hope it is a joke! Well, then you just never know --

Wow, I thought it may be a joke until I read one of the comments and realised that it must happen enough for a sign to be necessary.

Sandra, I actually know a person who drove off with the hose still in the car. While pumping gas he ran into a friend and struck up a conversation. When they were done talking he got into his car and drove off. Hose still attached. For a little while at least.

Steve - I like the complimentary nozzle idea!

Joan & Audu - I thought it was a joke too, that's why I snapped the photo. I guess it must happen often.

Susan - I could see driving off if you aren't in charge of the fill up...

Richard - Are you kidding! That seems incredible expensive. There must be some kind of "Oh _hit!" tax tacked onto that repair.

Debbie - You might have to put a post-it with $2500 written on it over your gas gauge!

Too funny! About 12 years ago, one of my passengers put gas in my car for me, they paid and got back in the car. Unfortunately they forgot one thing, to remove the nozzle from the tank! I didn't even realize what happened until I got home. HOW EMBARRASSING!

I wish it was a joke, but next time the station is empty go inside and ask to see their box of replacement nozzles, they have one promise. I have a friend that owes a station and he loses 1 to 2 a week from people driving off still connected.

1 to 2 per week! I had no idea it was so prevalent.

Surprisingly enough, I have seen someone drive off with the nozzle attached. Poor guy was so embarrased, he just kept on driving. When I went inside to tell the attendent, the attendent wasn't surprised at all - he said it happened at least once a month, and that people usually end up driving off with the nozzle attached.

The gas station had surveillance cameras that captured everyone's license plate, so they weren't worried about not finding the people - the gas station ends up mailing out the fine. That sucks. The attendent also told me that even when the person doesn't drive off, and claims responsiblity, it still costs them over $200. That really sucks!

Hello Again Niman, I didn't get a fine...never heard a word from the gas station after my incident! I didn't return the nozzle though, I didn't even know what happened until I got home! Emoticons See my story above.

It would have been great to see the gas attendants expression if you had returned the nozzle. I don't imagine many people do. :)

I will have to ask to see the box next time I go to this particular station and snap a photo of it for this post.

I've done it twice so I am sure it happens frequently.

The first time it happened was over 10 years ago. I worked in outside sales and stopped off at a gas station to fill up. As soon as I heard the click of the nozzle letting me know I was all done, I drove away. The gas station sat at an intersection with a light and was red. While waiting for green, this scary guy starts banging on my trunk and point to my gas tank. I got out, removed the nozzle, handed it to him and went about my day. No tickets or fines, just a near heart attack because of a crazy guy beating on the car.

The 2nd time I did it was about a month or so ago. Same story, in a hurry, filled up and drove off. This time, I heard the loud thump of the nozzle ripping out of my gas tank. Fortunately, there was no damage to the car or the nozzle.

I know...here's my sign. :)

There is a good chance that I will do it again.

That was a great laugh for today. I should have known the sign was for you, Amanda. Too many of those darn bloggatini's that Elaine serves up!

Sandra: I have to say I've never driven off with the nozzle still in my gas tank but now that I've said it, I will probably do it. But I have driven off with the gas cap dangling in the wind. So embarassing.

It's funny you say that. I am super paranoid now that I've brought it up. I have to do a double take in the side view mirror before I drive away from the pump. I promise to post the photo here if it happens... ;)

I knew a guy who used to play in the Castaways. Not only did he get kicked out for not remembering the words, but he would often left his bass out on the front steps at night and drive away from gas pumps with the nozzle still in his tank.

In our State we fill our own pumps so less chance of driving off with the pump. But it does seem like we should get at least a discount since we do all of the work. : )

Sandra, I really do think that people sometimes drive away before removing the nozzle. A lot of folks are talking on there phones and just don't pay attention to what they are doing. A while back I pulled into the station by my house and the attendant was cleaning up the mess made by someone that had pulled away before removing the nozzle. No wonder we now have the law regarding using hands free cell phones while driving, but that is a completely different post for another day.
