Tornado's In Virginia?

In my life time living in the Tidewater Area of Virginia which consists of Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Newport News and Hampton Virginia I don't ever remember hearing about tornado's leveling homes! Yes...we have our share of Hurricanes and Nor Easters but today I stumbled onto the site at Hill Point Farms in Suffolk where just a few days back we had a devastating tornado run over this pretty neighborhood of relatively new homes.

Having lived on the water most of my life I have seen the affects of Hurricanes in the Atlantic...surfed Hurricane swells in Virginia Beach and Cape Hatteras NC, seen beach roads washed out by the ocean, new inlets made on the outer banks by storms but never have I seen such isolated and condensed power that created such random destruction as I did in Suffolk today. Those around the country that live in areas where tornados are common probably are yawning at my pictures but I was simply stunned by what I saw. What I found amazing was that while several homes were completely destroyed in some cases the home right next door to a badly damaged home would be barely harmed!

In our area the water table is very high so in most locations we do not have basements or the ability to build a storm shelters so the home owners in these photos were very exposed to this danger. They must have been terrified.

I think I like the Hurricanes better! At least the surfers can have more fun with the big waves!

Bill, we were out of state when the tornado's went through and it was very unusual for Virginia. Hope it doesn't become a trend!

Hi Bill,

I agree with you on that.  Hopefully, we've seen that last of the Tornados.  How about just a good thunderstorm?  I'll take that!  Enjoy your weekend!

Bill,

Yes it is...

Some people consider the Eastern Shore, the Northern Neck, the Middle Peninsula, the Peninsula, and the portion of Hampton Roads south of the James River to be Tidewater. Others think "Hampton Roads" and "Tidewater" are the same. Some consider Tidewater to be just the portion of Virginia that is 1) east of the Fall Line, 2) between the James and Potomac rivers, and 3) west of the Chesapeake Bay.

All are correct. Cultural regions are defined in different ways by different people, and there is no official judge sitting in big chair at the front of a Federal Court of Regional Boundaries to make "official" decisions... However, to define the portion of Virginia that would be affected by the Chesapeake Bay Preservation Act, the state defined "Tidewater Virginia" to include the following jurisdictions:

The Counties of Accomack, Arlington, Caroline, Charles City, Chesterfield, Essex, Fairfax, Gloucester, Hanover, Henrico, Isle of Wight, James City, King George, King and Queen, King William, Lancaster, Mathews, Middlesex, New Kent, Northampton, Northumberland, Prince George, Prince William, Richmond, Spotsylvania, Stafford, Surry, Westmoreland, and York, and the Cities of Alexandria, Chesapeake, Colonial Heights, Fairfax, Falls Church, Fredericksburg, Hampton, Hopewell, Newport News, Norfolk, Petersburg, Poquoson, Portsmouth, Richmond, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, and Williamsburg.

Technically, Tidewater consists of many cities.

Hope this helps!  Don't be a stranger!
