Halloween Decorations to Avoid if Your Home is for Sale!

Full disclosure: Halloween is my absolute favorite time of year.  I love the fall weather, and I've been a fan of all things ghoulish and scary for as long as I can remember.  That said, I fully understand that not everyone shares my love of the creepier things in life!  So, when putting a home up for sale, it may be best to avoid putting up the following decorations to prevent turning off a buyer and leaving them running in fear!

Blood and guts!  Who doesn't love a good headless zombie?  Well, more people than you'd think.  ESPECIALLY any potential buyers who may be coming to view your property with small children in tow!  Keep the gore to a PG rating - you can still do scary without all the blood!

Anything political!  While you may find it hilarious to make your scarecrow look like whatever political figure you disagree with most, remember that it's always best to err on the side of tact.  This is true in any situation, not just Halloween.

Clowns!  Ok I was just checking to see if you're paying attention.  This one is a personal phobia of mine, so if I were to walk up and see a creepy clown peering at me from the bushes, I would very likely head quickly in the opposite direction!

Too Much!!  There is such a thing as going too overboard on the decorating, even if the items you put up are tasteful and not too scary.  These buyers are coming to see a property they could potentially choose to call their own - don't hide the outstanding features under layers of fake cobwebs and 74 strands of pumpkin lights!

Rotten Pumpkins!!  I'm guilty of this one - every year I pull out all the stops and carve 2 or 3 really nice pumpkins.  Not just regular jack-o-lanterns, though there's always one of those - but full haunted houses, creepy cats, or witches flying their broomsticks!  After all that work, it can be difficult to pick up and throw away those pumpkins when they've passed their prime.  For your buyers' (and agents'!) sakes, get rid of these things when they start to go soft, so nobody has to see that sad sight or smell that awful smell!

Just remember: when your home is up for sale, it's on the market 24/7, not just when an agent is coming by for a showing.  Every person that drives past is a potential buyer!  You definitely want to still feel at home in your house until it sells, but you also have to appeal to as many people as possible in the meantime, so keep those decorations tasteful, kid friendly, and gore free!!

When you love the artwork of your pumpkin, it's hard to throw it out! But it also is in part of needing to remember to do it. These are great points for anyone selling during the holiday season!

Hi Joel- it's hard in Florida to keep those carved pumpkins from turning to mush!  You make excellent points about Halloween decorations when selling your home.

Excellent suggestions, Joel!  Halloween decoration while selling a home isn't a topic I recall seeing before.

Good advice for Halloween decor while listed for sale. My advice is to stay as seasonal as possible, rather than holiday specific.

Great post!  So important to watch the pre-mush for pumpkins.  I used to live in the south and our practice of carving started with drawing.  We'd draw faces on the pumpkins with black marker, leaving the pumpkins out for 2 weeks before Halloween.  Then a few days before Halloween - carve away!  Fresh pumpkin to make and fresh faces to display.
