This post was partially inspired by Melody Botting's post When to send a Thank You card. There she talks about a few agents she's met over the years who were condescending to her or tried to convince her (to spare her the pain of course) that real estate was not a good career choice for her.
I had a similar experience, just after completing my real estate class. I ran into the agent who had been my parent's Realtor as I was on my way to have my hours signed off so that I could take the test. She was a very high producing Realtor and a very kind woman. I know she meant well when she said to me "Don't get into real estate, it's gotten so dog-eat-dog".
This was eighteen years ago. If she thought it was dog-eat-dog then, I wonder what she would think of it now, as there's less business to be divied up between more agents. It was not the first negative comment I would receive throughout my career. I was 26 when I entered the real estate industry, and the "hyenas" didn't like it one bit. There were comments and looks, but I kept my head down and moved forward. As Melody did, I chose to ignore most of the advice I received which didn't have anything to do with hardcore real estate systems and knowledge. I had a vision...a long term vision of where I would be and what I wanted to do.
I've often said, a career in real estate is one of the hardest high paying jobs in the world. It is also one of the easiest low paying jobs. It is what you make it. I'll say that again, it is what YOU make it.
You're going to come across many "pros" who want to give you advice, counsel you and point you in the right direction. That's fine, but take it all in through the filter of what your plan is...not colored by their past experiences and opinions.
Who in your market place are the leaders? The heads of the pack? Watch and emmulate them as much as you're able to...make their business models your own and you'll be just fine.
The law of the jungle is...know what you want, be willing to work hard for it and have confidence in your decision. as you begin to see results, you'll realize you've joined the pack and those hyenas will scoot off into the sunset.
