New to Real Estate? Welcome to the Jungle!

This post was partially inspired by Melody Botting's post When to send a Thank You card. There she talks about a few agents she's met over the years who were condescending to her or tried to convince her (to spare her the pain of course) that real estate was not a good career choice for her.

I had a similar experience, just after completing my real estate class. I ran into the agent who had been my parent's Realtor as I was on my way to have my hours signed off so that I could take the test. She was a very high producing Realtor and a very kind woman. I know she meant well when she said to me "Don't get into real estate, it's gotten so dog-eat-dog".

This was eighteen years ago. If she thought it was dog-eat-dog then, I wonder what she would think of it now, as there's less business to be divied up between more agents. It was not the first negative comment I would receive throughout my career. I was 26 when I entered the real estate industry, and the "hyenas" didn't like it one bit. There were comments and looks, but I kept my head down and moved forward. As Melody did, I chose to ignore most of the advice I received which didn't have anything to do with hardcore real estate systems and knowledge. I had a vision...a long term vision of where I would be and what I wanted to do.

I've often said, a career in real estate is one of the hardest high paying jobs in the world. It is also one of the easiest low paying jobs. It is what you make it. I'll say that again, it is what YOU make it.

You're going to come across many "pros" who want to give you advice, counsel you and point you in the right direction. That's fine, but take it all in through the filter of what your plan is...not colored by their past experiences and opinions.

Who in your market place are the leaders? The heads of the pack? Watch and emmulate them as much as you're able to...make their business models your own and you'll be just fine.

The law of the jungle is...know what you want, be willing to work hard for it and have confidence in your decision. as you begin to see results, you'll realize you've joined the pack and those hyenas will scoot off into the sunset.

It IS what you make it! You are so correct! It's one of the few jobs with no glass ceiling on your earning potential!

Colleen, you are such a wise woman from your life experience. I especially liked in this post your thought to take it all in and "filter" it according to what your plan is. Everyone must be themselves, and true to themselves. Very well chosen words of yours that I appreciate.

05/15/2008 11:30 PM by Gary Woltal - REALTOR® Dallas Ft. Worth (Keller Williams Realty)

So, was it the globe that made you smart...er or are ya just plain 'ol good. :)

When I first started real estate I had a few agents tell me I was a fool for having left my cop job... lucky for them I didn't listen.  Frankly, I can't imagine a better career.

La Nita, the no glass ceiling is very appealing isn't it? Tough to break through though!

Gary, that's what happens when you get "old". I'm a firm believer in listening to advice but not necessarily taking it all as Gospel!

OMG, Jesse, you were a COP? I'm telling you...you HAVE to write a book! I'm STILL waiting to hear the airplane story!!!!

05/16/2008 01:03 AM by Maple Valley WA Broker/Owner Colleen Fischesser 425-432-5400 (RE/MAX Select Real Estate)

Colleen: I'm sorry but I believe my husband was tipsy when he wrote that comment.  Cop?  He's gone over the deep end.

Ooops.... Sorry Colleen... that should have said _corp_ job.  Don't listen to her /\ the only thing I had to drink tonigth was ice tea... and not the long island version either. haha

Colleen,

This Rainer knows the Jungle.  Check out my meme Tagged For A Meme! Jungle Boy--Mike in Tucson.  No lions, though.  Just jaguars.

The great thing about AR comments is what you learn in passing.  Jesse, I didn't know that you used to be a cop!  And to be able to keep that news from Kathy all these years...

Morning Colleen,

Real Estate, like with any other endeover, is what one makes it. A truer statement was never conveyed. You are so right, well stated, accept all the advice offered and process it through your plan filter. I like that one!

Have a great day!

You know what I think? Those hyenas could recognize a threat to their business! They were just trying to scare you off. :)

05/16/2008 07:24 AM by Kelly Sibilsky ~ Lake Zurich RE/MAX Real Estate Agent (RE/MAX Unlimited Northwest)

The hyenas are good at disguising themselves as seasoned professionals who think they know the one and only way to get business.  I get a lot of comments on the rare occasions that I show up in the bricks and mortar office about not ever being there - the old guard thinks the only way to get clients is to sit at their desk and phone their past clients and SOI all day.  I just smile and keep blogging, knowing that I've got my own pack here.

Thank you so much for mentioning and linking my post.  I really liked your post What-Do-You-Expect.  You are right.  You have gained a groupie!

05/16/2008 08:19 AM by Melody Botting RE/MAX Empire Realty

I think you are absolutely right.  It is a bit more challenging and there certainly are a lot of people in the business that shouldn't be -- however, one must follow their own path to be a success!  Nice message.

05/16/2008 09:20 AM by Joan Whitebook, ABR, e-Pro, CEBA (Buyer's Option Realty Services)

I agree with you. The amount of effort you put into it is what you are going to get out of real estate.

05/16/2008 09:36 AM by Matthew Zgonc, REALTOR® for Modesto, CA (ERA Village One Real Estate)

Ok, so I guess we now know that Jesse & Kathy never sleep LOL....So now you're changing the story to a corporate job....uh huh. Say what you will, but I can see you walking the beat.

05/16/2008 09:58 AM by Maple Valley WA Broker/Owner Colleen Fischesser 425-432-5400 (RE/MAX Select Real Estate)

Mike, no wonder you've managed to survive this industry-a true jungle boy here in our Rain forest of sorts. You're right....the things you learn in comments!

Thanks Hal!

Kelly, LOL....I doubt that! They took one look at that 26 y/o twit w/ 3 kids under the age of 4 and said "Oh my, we've got to help this girl see the light". I'm glad I didn't listen!

Lisa, people really do think that their business model is the only one that works. Every now and then I'll start thinking that way and then have to check myself. Just because it wouldn't work for me, doesn't mean it won't work for them.

05/16/2008 10:02 AM by Maple Valley WA Broker/Owner Colleen Fischesser 425-432-5400 (RE/MAX Select Real Estate)

Melody, you're welcome! It was a great story, thanks for sharing.

Joan, yep-follow their own path to success, but they have to find it and stay on it!

Thanks for reading Matthew!

Colleen, the jungle can be a nice place to be too. I have scaled the tree tops for years now and love swinging vine to vine.

Great post, and so true. I just sent it to a young man just beginning his career who I'm unofficially mentoring. He's not in my company, but I am so hoping he succeeds.

Great post, Colleen!  It IS what you make it.  Great photo, too!  Thanks for sharing.  :)

Colleen- I heard the same advice when i started. I think it was in part because so many of the old timers did not want any competition.... it's a great business to be in that I know for a fact!

Best wishes, enjoy our sunny weekend!

Very sage words.

At my first office the "old timers" would make under the breath comments about new agents during the sales meetings...  Most of those "new agents" have gone on to be top producers...

Colleen,

Our company mascot is a tiger...like the lion, they get pretty hungy.

...but show me any industry that hasn't been made better and sharper-in the long run-by hungry, hardworking employees!

Danny, yeah, but can you peel that banana with one hand while you're swinging?LOL

Erica, thanks for forwarding, I hope it helps him not take some of the comments he may hear too seriously.

Thanks Debi!

Scott, I hate to say this but I think it's too hot outside! Aren't you glad you stuck it out though? WELL worth it!

Colleen: The only beat I can see him walking is one near a Dunkin Donuts.

I don't know why it says I commented at 2:55AM!  I had been in bed a looong time by then and Officer Jesse was snoring right beside me.

05/16/2008 06:11 PM by Kathy W. Clifton ~ Spouses Selling Houses (Jesse Clifton Real Estate)

That time stamp is screwed up... it's 5:25 and that says 8:22.  What's up with that?

05/16/2008 08:26 PM by Fairbanks Real Estate Broker Jesse Clifton (Jesse & Kathy Clifton, REALTORS - 907.699.6024 - )

Jesse, LOL.....nah I think you're probably a hair smarter ;-) I think Alaskan clocks just work differently

Colleen - It is "a dog eat dog world" and they were trying to scare the young pup away. Little did they know this puppy could take care of herself, you are obviously better than the "hyenas" in your area.
