The Realtor Safety App and Leaving Keys in Locks

By
Real Estate Agent with Elizabeth Anne Weintraub, Broker DRE #00697006

I watched the video last week about the Realtor Safety App that our Metrolist in Sacramento is introducing to us as a member benefit. For starters, I can't figure out why Metrolist would pay for a service for us. They haven't been exactly member friendly. So there must be something in it for them. Some kind of kickback, maybe? Or a temporary subscription that converts to paid later? Or a break in their legal fees if they are sued after your death? Because if you sign up for the program otherwise, that app costs $14.95 a month.

And the Realtor Safety App marketing tries to instill fear. The message is BE AFRAID. BE very AFRAID. You could be Killed NEXT. When actually the odds are very slim. The app relies in part on agent cooperation. They actually believe an agent who is out showing homes with a client would a) first look at their cell phone, ha, ha, ha, if it's not a substantial discount at happy hour, forget that. And b) they would be willing to stop what they're doing and run over to a house where TERRIFIED AGENT B is showing a home to a scary potential buyer. Or ax murderer, take your pick.

Over and over the marketing reiterates that if TERRIFIED AGENT B is wrong, and the client is not an ax murderer, well, hey YOUR COMMISSION IS SAFE. Which is superbly insulting.

Don't take my word for it. You can read more in my personal blog today at this link: The Problem With Trusting Other Sacramento Realtors.

Oh my goodness, I read the entire story. I'll bet you wanted to scream! Pick up the phone and call if there's a problem. I seriously cannot imagine leaving a key dangling from a lock. No wonder you're reluctant to trust that the app will bring you quick assistance from your local peers.

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD Probably what bothers me the most is the fact that last agent openly lied to me. Either that, or she's too feeble to remember what she did. But the non-cooperative nature of the whole ordeal was a bit much as well.

Fortunately I was on the road when my seller called so I could easily divert my route to swing by and put the key back into the lockbox.

Hi Elizabeth -- that's just weird --- I mean, the whole scenario with your office preview day and the dangling key.

I haven't heard about this new app -- yet.    Sounds like some kind of eventual source of revenue for the board.

Well, there have been keys that I thought I would have to leave dangling...because they did not want to come out of the lock...but with perseverence they finaly did. Now, if that happened, I would be calling the listing agent, pronto S.O.S .- not sure about the new app or how that would even work!?

Elizabeth, we have not been offered this "benefit", and sounds like they sure use scare tactics into purchasing the app.

Michael Jacobs Well, I linked to the company's website that produces that app in my personal blog. If we're getting it, you might be offered it too.

Mary Douglas Yes, you would think an agent would care enough to call the listing agent. That's what you or I would do. We wouldn't stick the key in the door and stomp off in a huff.

Joan Cox Part of the premise of that app is say you're showing a house and you begin to feel like the buyer could be a creep. The app figures you care too much about the commission to run out the door. So you press a button on your phone and it sends out alerts to other agents in the area who might be nearby in hopes that agent could pop his or her head into the door and pretend to be "previewing" the property and somehow magically stop the creepy buyer from stabbing both of you to death.

I think our MLS has offered something like this.

Hi Elizabeth.... I've never remotely felt afraid showing a home to a client in 25 years... they are well vetted befor I do so. And if it's someone I don't know well from an ad or sign call, I bring my husband with me. My clients always comment on it, but I lock all doors behind me when I enter a home to show.

Nina Hollander I realize there are responsible Realtors all over the country who would never do some of the crap I've witnessed in Sacramento, hate to admit.

A random agent is not who i would want coming to my rescue.  No thank you.  Your story shows the brain power and logic skills so many are out and out lacking.
