Would this ad prompt you to buy?

What constitutes a “Good” ad?

Is it an ad like you’ll see if you watch the Superbowl? No, not really. All too often those ads leave you laughing – but forgetting the name of the product.

A good ad is one that reinforces the name and prompts you to action. Like the restaurant ads that leave my husband wishing that it wasn’t a 60-mile drive to get there for lunch. (That’s the trouble with living in the woods.)

Looking through old posts, I found this story about an ad that was running on TV in 2009. You may still remember it. I do.

It was an ad for metal roofing that depicted a young couple about to view a home for sale. The agent young couple looking at real estatementioned a few features inside the home, then started going on and on about the benefits of the wonderful metal roof.

She told them how it would keep them safe from fire, last forever, look beautiful, etc. Then she said “So, ready to make an offer?” The potential buyers asked if they could look inside first, and the agent looked at them and said “Why?”

I always got a kick out of it, but I didn’t call it a “good” ad.

Did it sell metal roofing? More importantly, did it cause homeowners to go to that particular company to buy their metal roofing? If it mentioned a brand name, I didn’t catch it – I was too interested in how silly the agent was acting.

On top of that, the ad didn’t say why theirs was better than any others, which was another mistake.

If it had any effect at all, it might have caused people to consider metal roofing if they were building, or re-roofing a current home. Then, my guess is they’d have called their local builder, and the local builder would have contacted a local source. I don’t see metal roofing as something you’d order on line. (Would they send the installers along in the shipment?)

What about seeing it from the real estate point of view?

Would that ad serve to make real estate agents look ditzy? Or did viewers see it the way it was probably intended to come across – that metal roofing is so superior that an agent will go off the deep end?

I don’t know. I think the actress who played the agent was very likeable, but I don’t think I’d want her working for me!

If you remember that ad, what did you think?

Here's to good marketing – and if you need a little help deciding what message your prospects should hear, get in touch. I love promoting good real estate agents.

A good anything addresses the famous question of: What's in it for me?

That's exactly right, Richie Alan Naggar. Funny - that ad did talk about what's in it for the homeowner to have a metal roof. It just forgot to focus on the brand name, etc.

Your point is well taken!  Memorable ads that entertain do not necessarily convert customers.

Good morning Marte. I don't remember the ad but I suspect it would have caused a smile for sure.

I think so Sheila Anderson - it had that effect on me.

I don't recall ever seeing or hearing that ad. Of course, it sounds like they were selling the roof not the house.  Made me laugh thinking about if we did business that way.

Oct 07, 2017 10:05 AM
Marte Cliff

Yes, Anna Hatridge, they were selling metal roofing, not houses or real estate services. They just forgot to impress the audience with the brand of roofing.

Hi Marte - in a nutshell NO!  I don't like ads like this at all. In fact I never watch any ads as we skip them if at all possible or mute them.

Anna Banana Kruchten,CRS,CRB,GRI - I saw that ad years ago, back when I occasionally paid attention to the TV. Now, since my husband generally keeps the sound on mute, I read a book instead. I could turn on the sound, but I've lost interest.

As an agent, I would think the ad was silly since I would never behave that way.  But a consumer might see it from the perspective of "this roofing is so superior that it's the prominent feature and what you should look for if you are buying a home."

I think it was smart targeting but a fail on getting the brand name across.  Ads like that happen and always leave me thinking about who the company  hired to create such an ineffective ad.

Kate McQueen, REALTOR® - Direct marketing copywriters love to make fun of "Madison Avenue" writers because they're creative, but their ads aren't required to sell anything. There is simply no way to test them when they're just part of the marketing mix.

Over the years I have seen many ads that I thought were so well done, entertaining, funny and really memorable. Just 1 problem, I could not tell you what the company  was.

While funny it wasted their money.

Yes, John Wiley - a few years ago there was a Super Bowl ad with a dog that went to the refrigerator and got the beer. Dogs always catch my attention, especially when they're so smart. But I have no idea what brand of beer it was.

Good afternoon, I do not remember and add such as the one you talked about. Not much on TV so if it is not on the interent or on Facebook or Twitter then you will not catch me to view it. Would the add get me to buy a metal roof most likely not.

It's interesting how many choices we have these days - and how we all have our preferences. Some watch TV; some watch but record it so they can skip the ads; some like you go on line; and  those like me pick up a book.

I don't remember it, but I did watch the video, thank you Tim Maitski!

As silly as it is, I do think it's pretty funny.

The absurd idea of buying a house, based on a roof and never seeing inside is simply humor to make their point of the roof being so valuable. Realistic no, but I bet it did generate some business for the roof company.

Oct 08, 2017 07:58 AM

It may have generated business Sharon Tara - although not in our area, because I've never heard of that company. On the other hand, people like me noticed the comedy and not the name of the advertiser.

I enjoy watching and listening to ads because I'm constantly learning how other businesses market their products or services. Some elements I can adopt and so much more not to use. There are many ads that are so clever that no one can recall the product or service.

So true Kimo Jarrett - I keep thinking of the ad where the dog opens the refrigerator and brings his human a beer. I have no idea what kind of beer that was.

Watching ads and reading sales letters is a good way to educate yourself. You have the opportunity to stop and think about whether it would pull you in and why - or why not.

I don't remember the ad, or maybe it didn't air in my area. But "real estate agent" as a character type in film and television is usually not a good portrayal of our industry, in my opinion.

Oct 09, 2017 04:55 AM
Marte Cliff

I think you're right Elva Branson-Lee - as someone else pointed out, quite a few ads are based on making someone look foolish. I even saw one that made the real estate buyer look brainless.

Good ad copy always catches my eye. I especially appreciate it when I read 'good copy' on the MLS description--some agents take the time to really get creative and some just have a laundry list of features.

Yes Mary Hutchison, SRES, ABR -why bother to write a description if all you do is repeat the detail sheet? I think you hit on the problem when you said "take the time." Many don't do that.

I have to say, it takes a lot for me to remember an ad; repetition to the extreme, annoying, stupid and other various reasons that were probably not intended. The only ads I've every responded to were ads that clearly filled an immediate need and offered a better value than anyone else. As Richie Alan Naggar posted above, What's in it for me ???
