What constitutes a “Good” ad?
Is it an ad like you’ll see if you watch the Superbowl? No, not really. All too often those ads leave you laughing – but forgetting the name of the product.
A good ad is one that reinforces the name and prompts you to action. Like the restaurant ads that leave my husband wishing that it wasn’t a 60-mile drive to get there for lunch. (That’s the trouble with living in the woods.)
Looking through old posts, I found this story about an ad that was running on TV in 2009. You may still remember it. I do.
It was an ad for metal roofing that depicted a young couple about to view a home for sale. The agent mentioned a few features inside the home, then started going on and on about the benefits of the wonderful metal roof.
She told them how it would keep them safe from fire, last forever, look beautiful, etc. Then she said “So, ready to make an offer?” The potential buyers asked if they could look inside first, and the agent looked at them and said “Why?”
I always got a kick out of it, but I didn’t call it a “good” ad.
Did it sell metal roofing? More importantly, did it cause homeowners to go to that particular company to buy their metal roofing? If it mentioned a brand name, I didn’t catch it – I was too interested in how silly the agent was acting.
On top of that, the ad didn’t say why theirs was better than any others, which was another mistake.
If it had any effect at all, it might have caused people to consider metal roofing if they were building, or re-roofing a current home. Then, my guess is they’d have called their local builder, and the local builder would have contacted a local source. I don’t see metal roofing as something you’d order on line. (Would they send the installers along in the shipment?)
What about seeing it from the real estate point of view?
Would that ad serve to make real estate agents look ditzy? Or did viewers see it the way it was probably intended to come across – that metal roofing is so superior that an agent will go off the deep end?
I don’t know. I think the actress who played the agent was very likeable, but I don’t think I’d want her working for me!
If you remember that ad, what did you think?
Here's to good marketing – and if you need a little help deciding what message your prospects should hear, get in touch. I love promoting good real estate agents.
