Moving Is Not Easy

Today I went by one of my newly signed listings to see how things were going.

They were just a bit beyond exhausted from cleaning, packing and basically purging years of their parent's home.

While there we went through each level to see the progress and make a few more suggestions.

There was a stack of photos, books, prints and memorabilia.

Each person asking the other the fate of each item.

This was not an easy task. What do you do with those framed  professional diplomas and years of memories?

And then we all smiled at the print pictured above.

It told the story and summed up the day with those three words in the top left of picture.

Getting ready for the sale.

Margaret, just have done this recently myself. It is a tall order. Most of us don't really know how much extra stuff we have to contend with if the house is big enough to handle it all. The tough  part is in the downsizing.  What do you really need, and what can you part with?  For some folks, that's the agonizing and difficult part.

So true! It's so difficult and yet when it's done can be stunningly satisfying.  ugh! Great post.

The longer in one place makes the move much more difficult.  Collecting "stuff" is easy, moving it is hard, getting rid of it for the move is harder.

Not easy at all.  I see children and relatives feel obligated to keep their loved ones "crap" that truly has no value and not one really wants it.  Emotions run very deep.

Those of us who haven't moved in years (or even decades), usually have more stuff than those who haven't.  I remember my mom said 2 moves were worth a fire.

I'm in the process of helping my mother purge her items as we anticipate a move for her in the next few months.  I have asked her that when she gets to items she is on the fence about, she needs to ask herself one simple question.  "Do I want to pay someone to move this?"

Hi Margaret - That's the truth. When we moved this summer, we used Craigslist, Facebook, word of mouth and a giant roll-off dumpster to pare everything down to manageable size. I have no idea how we ever got so much stuff.

Margaret- during one of my first redesigns, the adult children of my client pulled me aside and told me confidentially that they wanted none of the stuff she'd collected over the years.  Thank goodness for Craigslist, local Facebook groups, Offer up and local charities!!!
