BUYING PUMPKINS, GOURDS, & SQUASH

Halloween Buyers are usually faced with  uncertainty when it comes to buying pumpkins, gourds, and squash. For example, first you have to identify what you need and want. For example, what you think is a squash may actually be a gourd, and what you think is a gourd, may really be a pumpkin, so there's always that question, do you really know what it is you want to buy?

QUESTIONS & MORE QUESTIONS

After you figure out exactly what you want there's the question about style, comfort, color, and size. Will it fit your description of what it is you need to have? And then of course, there's that burning question how much does it weigh and what will it cost?

THE PERFECT PURCHASE

So the consumer sets out in search of the perfect pumpkin, squash and/or gourd. But what about location? Is it going to be goo big? Too small, or just right? Suddenly, there's confusion!

Supply and demand becomes an issue. Just when you think you have it all figured out, there seems to be a shortage of inventory. This feeling of uncertainty gets very confusing and you begin to think about the structure, what about defects, design, shape, functionality, days on the market? If you wait too long, it'll either be gone or you start wondering, why didn't anyone else buy it?  In terms of cost, you ask yourself questions. Do I really want to pay that much or how about if I bargain?

THAT OLD BLACK MAGIC

In terms of time and money, what choices do you have? Do you want to squash your bank account and get a lemon instead of a big, beautiful, pumpkin? Because of anxiety, panic, or uncertainty, the consumer knows he and/or she doesn't have much time for negotiations, which is followed up by, let's wait and see, or maybe, I'm going to have to pray on this.

What happens next is anyones guess. The buyer may suddenly, like magic have more money to spend, so money isn't an object anymore and they can become picky. But deep down inside, there's that's gnawing feeling, am I making the right decision? And just like that, warts appear, and seeds of doubt are scattered all over the universe!

Stay tuned for Part 2.

That's quite a tutorial on pumpkins, squash and gourds, Patricia.  I can pretty much tell the three apart, but I'm not as schooled on the different varieties.

Myrl Jeffcoat - Oh! And there a lot more that I didn't know about either! Honestly, I don't recall ever seeing so many varieties in my life time!

Sharon Tara - Thank you so much for reading my blog and thinking highly of my analogy. I put a lot of thought into it and appreciate comments.

Thanks for the photo compliment too! It was very time-consuming to take all these photos (plus I have 4 more collages).

Hi Patricia Feager

I didn;t realize there were so many variations in pumpkins and such.

Pam & I enjoy Acorn Squash, Butternut, Zucchini, Summer Squash, Blue Hubbard Squash and more.

Doug Dawes - Until I went to the Dallas Arboretum and saw these + four more collages with 4 photos each, I didn't know there were this many either!

The colors, shapes, and sizes are pretty amazing. But I confess, I don't know how to cook squash!

Hi Patricia - love your photos!  I don't buy any 'real' pumpkins because it's just to warm here yet.  But I did take out my containers of fun fall stuff just this morning and am looking forward to falling it up around here!  I can't do the front porch yet as we're having the house painted next week so that will have to wait! And BTW - good primer on all this stuff! Who knew!!

Anna Banana Kruchten,CRS,CRB,GRI - I completely understand! Our climate is too warm for them outside too. Since we still have our A/C on, they last longer indoors.

I'll bet your house will look great freshly painted! It really makes a big difference! I hope it goes well!

Hi Patricia - I have to admit that I never thought about pumpkins in that way, but the process sounds strangely familiar .....

Thank you!

Hi Patricia,

Even in our specialty food stores I do not see this much variety! Thank you for sharing all the unusual pumpkins, squash and gourds. Your analogy brings it all home.

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® - I have 4 more collages I made with different varieties - boy that was time-consuming! But I was happy to share and it took time for me to compose the analogy.

It sounds like it might just be easier to buy a house than a pumpkin, gourd or squash!  I'll bet you could help with that, too!

Hi Patricia -- what a fun post filled with great photos. I like your comparative market analysis approach to this very topical subject.   There was obviously a lot of research involved with this thoughtful post.

I look forward to learning more in Part 2.
