9 Halloween Safety Tips - Keeping Kids Safe in Sioux Falls

Lots of children across the globe enjoy Halloween and have a great time that day. However, it is important to keep your children under some supervision to keep them safe. Especially children which are at a young age, they can be injured that night. We have all heard about Halloween safety tips. There is a very good reason for this, too! Many kids and teenagers have experienced injuries, sickness, and even died as a result of failure to adhere to safety on this particular holiday. While Halloween is a fun and festive holiday for all, it can also be a very dangerous one if the right safety measures are not put into place. To be frank, how often is safety discussed in your family? Is it a priority? Do you make it a point to go over some simple, but life-saving safety guidelines? Probably not.

9 Halloween Safety Tips Halloween Safety

Below are some simple safety tips to review with your kids before heading out for a night of trick-or-treating.

1.Teach children not to consume anything that they receive until all items have been thoroughly inspected by a trusted adult.

I cannot count the number of incidents that I have found related to sicknesses and deaths that have occurred as a result of tainted candy and other treats that have been consumed by children and adults alike. It is important to always check treats for tampering and inspect candy to ensure that it is in the original wrapping; it has not been opened, manipulated, and tampered with in any manner. Furthermore, Kids should immediately discarded treats that are received which are homemade and wrapped in an unprofessional manner including loose items like fruit pieces. To ensure added security, children should only visit areas and people’s homes that are familiar to parents.

  1. When dressing a kid in a Halloween costume, ensure that the outfit fits them appropriately.

It is also an essential Halloween safety tip to ensure that the child is considered to be "flame retardant". Parents should select costumes that are very bright side and has plenty of reflective tape on the outfit. This will help them to be seen by drivers. Furthermore, ensure your child does not trip over costumes that are too large. They should be able to see the area in which they are walking. Besides, it is important that others are able to see your kids while they are out and about trick or treating. All costumes and masks need to be clearly marked flame resistant. Selecting the right size costume will avoid trips and falls. Having the right fitting shoes will keep everyone from stumbling. Children should be able to see and breathe properly when wearing a facial mask. Besides wearing reflective clothing, kids should carrying a flashlight or glow stick to enable others see them at night.

  1. Trick or Treat Responsibly

It is a highly important issue to discuss your children's Halloween adventure. Guide them on where to go and what to do should something goes wrong. Always check to see if the pouch light is on. In case it is not, that is a sure sign the homeowners are not at home or not participants in the night activities. Kids below 12 should not be allowed to go by themselves at night. It is always recommended for parents to supervise their activities closely. Stay close with them and look after the activities they are involved with.

Children Need To See and Be Seen

Kids should watch out for cars and other types of traffic. Using crosswalks, traffic lights and looking both ways will help. Halloween costumes should be visible by others. The inability of drivers to see your kid may result in major injuries or even death. Costumes that are dark with no reflecting materials can be a problem. The usage of flashlights, trick or treat candy glow bags, glow sticks and glow in the dark necklaces work great in the night. Remember to take your time and slow things down as Halloween night kids are everywhere, swarming the neighborhood, walking and running all over the place.

  1. Ensure your kids enter only well-lit houses.

Entering a dark house might be exciting and interesting, especially during Halloween. However, danger might happen in the room before the children and the parents know. Children should be supported to go in groups. Get other small children to form a small group to engage on trick or treat activities. The risk of danger will reduce when they go in groups. Avoid letting your children go alone. Trick or treating with a responsible adult, in pairs or a group of friend is the best way to secure safety. Older mature kids should travel with friends, carry a cell phone and check in periodically.

  1. Ensure safe tricks and treats.

The areas which your children are going for tricks and treats should somewhere not be too quiet and must be safe to walk. Kids should not walk across yards but rather focus on safe pedestrian area. Another essential tip is to wear comfortable and flexible costumes, to avoid tripping and be able to escape from dangerous situations. In case of emergency, do they know how to contact you? Ask them if they remember your number and have some coins to call or a cell phone to carry around. If the need arises, they could call you immediately. Alternatively, you can prepare name tags with address for them so people are able to help them to get back when they are lost.

  1. Avoid carrying sharp and rigid knives.

This safety precaution is very important as you might not be able to predict what accident those knives might cause. If you will use these, try using flexible and soft ones. Knives, swords and other accessories should be made of flexible material so as not to pose a hazard.

  1. Ensure your kid’s costume is made of flame-retardant materials.

Parents should choose a costume made of flame retardant material. Costumes should be short enough so that they don't cause your child to trip and fall. Ensure masks are not only fitted securely but allow your kids to see well and not hinder visibility. Also ensure that face paint is non toxic and hypoallergenic.

  1. Your child's mask should be well ventilated.

A major concern and problem here is the improper ventilation in the masks that fully cover the face. Although, manufacturers put nose holes inside the masks, these holes are rarely large enough for proper breathing. Poorly ventilated masks that are worn for long periods of time will result in carbon dioxide builds up. This can cause your child to faint or worse - have carbon dioxide poisoning. There is also the concern about your child being able to see. If the mask or costume your child is wearing inhibits him to see well, he or she could trip, fall, or even walk out into the street. The mask’s eye holes should be about twice the size of your kid’s eyes. Messy wigs that might hinder your child’s visibility should also be avoided.

In this game, kids are divided into two teams. Each team is then lined up. The first person in each line is given a jack-o-lantern. An orange with a face drawn on with black marking pen can be used. Alternatively, an orange balloons with or without faces can be used. The first kid puts the fake pumpkin under his or her chin and keeps it there without using his or her hands. You can top those with gummy worms or bugs so that you make them super gross. If the party has a large number of kids in attendance, do not forget to keep the toys and favors large.
