Why Buying a Car in Hawaii is Somewhat Difficult

By
Real Estate Agent with Lyon Real Estate BRE #00697006

Well meaning people will tell you all sorts of things about buying a car in Hawaii. Several have suggested that I purchase a much older car because somehow I guess they think I would prefer to drive an already rusted-out vehicle. No, thank you, I would like to watch my brand new car slowly rust away myself. (There is also a dealer option called electromagnetic corrosion protection, that I hope is more than the tap of a magic wand.)

Others have suggested I lease a car because then I can continue to pay $6,000 a year in lease payments for the rest of my life, yet always drive a new vehicle every 5 years. None of those options is workable for me. I'd rather buy a reliable car that is new and not overly expensive nor dirt cheap.

But what a learning experience it has been. You can read more in my personal blog today at this link: Buying a Car in Hawaii vs. Shipping a Car From California.

HI Elizabeth... one of my dearest friends was raised in Hawaii. Anytime she lived there she always said no new cars because of the rust factor... all her cars were in nice condition but always used.

Hi Elizabeth,

Do I dare compare it to buying a home? YIKES! So many questions to answer.

Elizabeth- I cannot imagine what it must take to goods from the mainland to Hawaii. The young lady that helps me hide the greys looked into moving to Hawaii and has it as a goal in the next 5 years or so.

Elizabeth, not sure if I could drive a rusted out car either, as rather used to newer or brand spanking new cars!

Nina Hollander see, that attitude makes zero sense to me. But then I am not a used car person. Of course, I am also not retired, LOL.

Michael Jacobs Yeah, who knew? I have discovered that other beloved vehicles in the US are not only pronounced differently but some of them have entirely different names in Japan, better suited to appeal to the Japanese. Of course, I would probably know that if I have been to Japan, but still intend to go. It's a marked destination.

I had no idea about the pronunciation either, Elizabeth! Interesting!

And, WOW, what an experience - good grief. It's a good thing you're tenacious and not impulsive! This was not a quick process, for sure.

Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents - I've always lived by the ocean including Hawaii and Carmel-by-the-Sea. No one I ever knew bought a rusted car because they are close to the ocean. Who ever started that rumor? Do you stop buying a house at the ocean? Nope, you pay a premium for the location.

Back in the 1980s, I bought two side by side lots near Pahoa, on the other side of Hawaii from you.  I remember researching the pros and cons of shipping or buying cars local back then, and came to the same conclusion as you.
