Frank James was born in Greensboro, North Carolina back in 1925.he graduated from Collegedale Academy in 1943. After graduation he enlisted in the United State Army. He served as a staff sergeant with the 101st Airborne Division where he landed in Normandy.
He was captured at the Battle of the Bulge however, he escaped earning him the Bronze Star, the Combat Medical Badge and the Glider Badge with one star.
After his tour of duty, he enrolled at Southern Missionary College where he received his bachelor’s degree continuing his education he received his MD in 1956 from Loma Linda University. Afterwards he worked as a general practitioner before completing his residency in orthopedic surgery at the Los Angeles County Hospital.
In 1964 he teamed up with Dr. Robert Kerlan to specialize in sports medicine, the duo co-founded Southwester Orthopedic Medical Group in 1965. As they say the rest is history. In 1974, Frank James Jobe made sports history when he performed the first reconstruction of the ulnar collateral ligament of the elbow which was a revolutionary procedure. He named procedure the “Tommy John surgery” on of course the Los Angeles Dodgers picture Tommy John. It is now estimated one-third of all major league pitchers have undergone the procedure.
