Are you a János Háry Realtor in real life or just on the internet?

You must be thinking what on earth is Endre Barath, a Beverly Hills Realtor talking about with a headline like that? Please bear with me as I give you a little Hungarian folklore and music history.

There exists a folklore about a Hungarian peasant, who became a soldier and after he left the service, ended up as not your atypical veteran. He would sit, day in and day out in a tavern and tell tall stories about his own heroic exploits. Ultimately this folklore was made into an Opera, by the world renown Hungarian composer Zoltan Kodály.

So, you might still be wondering, Endre what on earth does this imaginary character and Opera have anything to do with real estate? Specifically, what does it have to do with Realtors in Los Angeles or anywhere else?  

Well, according to Kodály, the yarns that János told had a mixture of realism, naivety and comic humor. On the surface one would think that he was just a braggart and his stories are irrelevant. Thanks to his wild imagination, he was creating for himself and for others a beautiful dream world.

This of course had me thinking, what do we do as Realtors? Well, we sit down with our buyers and sellers and tell stories of our accomplishments to gain their attention, before we start focusing on what they want to achieve. Some real estate practitioners embellish their accomplishments, just like the one sitting around telling tall stories in the Hungarian folklore as well as in the Opera.

Some embellish their achievements on Social Media like FB, G+, Nextdoor and the list goes on and on. Where do you fit it in the broad picture?

How much do buyers and sellers really care about your “tall stories”?

I find that most of my clients find me on the World Wide Web and they start following me. Almost like stalking, they see my listings posts, my sold posts, my market reports and the advice posts that I give. It is like being in the spotlight without really feeling the pressure as a result.

 My take is, that all these posts only bring us to the “reaching out phase”. If the internet persona is the same in real life then the conversation begins and inquirers become clients.

I start asking lots of questions such as: Do they want to buy their dream home? Do they want to sell their starter home so they can buy their dream home now?  The benefit is, the more answers I get the easier it is to achieve what the buyer and seller envisions.

So, with a mixture of realism and humor we try to find out what they are trying to achieve. I am not your János Háry Realtor, what you read is what you get in real life. So, if you want straight forward advice, please reach out to me directly.

Oh man do we love this one. I really get a little queasy when people start talking about me, me, me. Regardless of their job. However, when other Realtors start bragging, it really bugs me. Our job is to help others. Commissions, number of closings, etc. Who cares? Do a great job and treat people like royalty - period.

The funny part is, the more they brag, the more we think they're full of hot air. They're making up stories to cover up their own incompetence.
