Dining at Michelin 3-Star in San Francisco

By
Real Estate Agent with Elizabeth Anne Weintraub, Broker DRE #00697006

One of the surprising differences between Los Angeles, where we are visiting next month, and San Francisco, where we often go from Sacramento a few times every year, are the restaurants. The last time I looked, there are not any 3-star Michelin restaurants in Los Angeles. There might not be any 1-star, come to think about it.

But San Francisco is loaded with top-rated restaurants. I had been trying to choose between Quince and Saison for our trip last weekend. Quince made it easy for me. They were booked for a private event the evening of October 13th. You can read more in my personal blog and see all of the photographs today at this link: Tasting Menu at Michelin 3-Star Saison in San Francisco.

Good morning, Elizabeth -- have I ever told you I love your writing style?  Well, it bears repeating...great review of Saison.  I remember a few years ago when I was out with my parents, sister and brother-in-law for a special dinner and I ordered a beet appetizer -- my Mom said -- you don't like beets, do you?  Yes, I do once I discovered they don't always come out of a can.

When are you scheduled to visit Quince?

Michael Jacobs Oh, flattery will get you everywhere in life you know, LOL. Although I can admit to eating beets straight from the can with a fork. Spinach in a can, too. Granted, there are tastier versions but canned is not that bad.

We don't have a scheduled date for Quince. Perhaps another year.

Hi Elizabeth... I always enjoyed selecting restaurants in Europe when we lived there from the Guide Michelin when we travelled. In fact, I think I still have my Guide from the late 1980's. Might be interesting to compare a current one to those from 30 years ago.

Elizabeth,

Some of my foodie friends are of the opinion that outside of France, Michelin guides are useless. We made the colossal mistake of dining at one in Florence and it was horrid.   The reason Michelin snubbed LA after 2016, according to those in the know, is that LA is casual and one can go to the best of restaurants without without ties and fancy dresses...  Glad you enjoyed your dinner at Saison.  And that urchin comes from our Santa Barbara waters.  A large number of them are sent to Japan.  A

Nina Hollander There is a revolt, of sorts, going on with a few elite Michelin star restaurants, just like LA. Some chefs don't want somebody else telling them what hoops to jump through or how high.

Hello Ron and Alexandra Seigel Yes, I have heard that sentiment before but I disagree. Of course Michelin is well regarded in France but it's also right on the nose in major US metro areas.

As for Los Angeles, I've heard the reason for the departure was apathy, lack of interest from natives. It's not due to attire, LOL. San Francisco patrons often wear jeans to 3-star restaurants. It's very casual . . . due to the tech industry.

Sorry,

But I disagree, I think that Los Angeles has a great food scene, and has gotten raves from some of the best foodies around.  It is where Thomas Keller began his career at checkers.  A

Good morning, Elizabeth... I'll admit to taking reviews with a very big grain of salt. One of the worst dining experiences we ever had in Charlotte was at one of the highest rated restaurants. (That's how I feel about movie reviews, too.)

Good morning Elizabeth. I hope you enjoy your meal. I love a good place with stars or just a reliable joint.

Do you remember awhile back when you suggested I watch a few episodes of "Grace and Frankie"?  Well, I had been putting it off until I was so sick of political news and needed a respite.  So, about a week ago, I began with Season 1.  I watched all 13 episodes.  Then it was on to Season 2.  I think it is around episode 12 that Grace and Frankie come up with the idea to start their little business.

Now, I know you are sitting there wondering what all that has to do with this post of your's.  It has to do with the picture above.  I'm looking at those two things on the two plates near the right side of the photo.  What the heck are those?  As near as I can tell, they may be something that Grace and Frankie sold the chefs at Saison.  But, I don't believe they belong on a dinner plate!

Nina Hollander This is why you need to develop the sources from which you obtain your information. Everybody has an opinion. Some people's opinions are better than others.

Hi Elizabeth... what's that expression? "Everyone's a critic." I stopped listening to the opinions of people I don't know a long time ago. Prefer to check things out for myself and draw my own conclusions.

What's that expression, Nina? You can learn from somebody else's mistakes or you can learn from your own? Heh, heh.

I see a little of you and me in Grace and Frankie, Elizabeth.  We have yet to spend any time together that mischief didn't occur!

That is true, Myrl. Although I'm gonna let you be Grace. I suspect I'm a bit wilder than you. Have you ever been in jail? I don't think so.
